Thanks "alc03c" for your quick reply.

What I really wish to do is to use the scanning utility that comes with Windows. I prefer that to the software that comes with the HP. The reason for my preference is that, unlike the HP software, the Windows utility allows me to preview and mannually select what I specifically wish to scan. HP automatically assumes that what is on the tray is to be completely scanned. Sometimes that is not the case. There are also other reasons but that is the first one that comes to mind.

I used to have it setup in a way that I could bypass the HP software but now, probably as a result of some automatic update, if I click on the scanning icon the only software available is the HP.

I also have another scanner, a Xerox DocuMate 510 that allows me to use the Windows utility with no problem even though, it too, comes with software of its own. I bought exactly to circumvent the situation with HP but not only is it a costly solution but also occupies additional space which I would like to free up.

    Thanks again for your reply.

As far as I know, windows provide a scanner configuration utilitie but no scanner software is include, you can scan from a Microsoft application but it will automaticly use the software and driver that came with your product.

Officejet 7410 installation fails when it gets to the driver installation on windows 8

Sounds as if the software driver is not correct. I'm sure you downloades the software from HP and when asked for which operating system you checked the Windows 8 option. Being a New OS the driver might be an issue. Look on the HP Officejet 7410 website and look for a troubleshooting/support section.

If it is a USB device then unplug it from the PC boot up the pc and then plug it in, Windows should try to install it ffor you ,make sure you have the CD with the drivers available

Either that or go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the software

Re-install and refit the printer following the CD's instructions
