That link was for a side by side and for the condenser fan....no help at all for a bottom freezer with dead evaporator fan.
What I need is instructions on how to tear down to get to the evaporator fan, and is it controlled by a board or a cold control?

The exploded views do show the the unit has an evaporator fan and I already knew it was located in the freezer compartment but how do I get at it without bending breaking or damaging the unit while trying to get in. Do the doors have to come off? How does the sliding freezer drawer come out?

  • russell ferguson Apr 22, 2009

sorry guys this really isn't helping. I have already had my head stuck in this fridge and freezer and could not figure out how to take the freezer drawer out of my way much less see how to remove the bottom of the fridge compartment or the top of the freezer compartment. The exploded schematics do not help show how to take apart the units.
I am just going to have to tear into it and hope for the best.

I think the fresh food door needs to come off to allow for the front bar to be removed which in turn will allow for the bottom of the fridge to slide out.

If anyone can confirm this or add to this please jump in and describe.

    Thanks
    Fixitfergie.

I think you have to remove the bottom of the fridge, compartment first. Then you remove the panels at the bottom of the freezer and access the evap assembly.

My GE Side by Side is not working wierdly. the top few shelves on both the freezer and refridgerator are not cooling but the bottom shelves are cold.

Check to see if your evaporator fan is blowing in the freezer, then check your condensor fan behind the back panel. If those are both running make sure your coils are clean underneath your fridge. Cold goes down heat goes up, that's why it is warm up top and cold down. Start there. Good luck!

Freezer temperature fluctuating way up and down. 0 recommended. 11 degrees right now. 18 earlier. Food defrosting. Ice cream soft. GE Profile bottom drawer freezer. Only 3-4 years old.

Your problem could stem from an issue with the defrost timer, the compressor or its attachments (e.g.: relay, capacitor, etc.), or the freezer/evaporator fan motor. Contact an appliance service company.

Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

The ideal temp for the freezer is around 10 degrees F.
Look at the evaporator coils behind the rear cover inside the freezer and check the ice forming on the coils.

Top of freezer is fine but the bottom isn't as

Sounds like your evaporator fan is not doing its job. The purpose of this fan is to move cold air from the evaporator coil (behind the lining of the unit) to the rest of the freezer and to the refrigerator.

The fan should be behind an access plate at the top of the freezer compartment. If it is running, you should be able to hear it. If you don't hear it, open the access plate and look at it. If the fan is not turning, you will need to replace the fan motor.
