Question about Washing Machines

Spinning doesn't take place during spin cycle

I have a Whirlpool Stylemaster 4217141 washer that doesn't spin during the spin cycle. The water appears to drain out but I am left with clothes that are soaked due to spinning not taking place. Any thoughts as to what might be wrong and what part may need to be replaced.

    Thanks for the reply.

The machine makes a humming noise but doesn't spin.

  • ajaymess Apr 21, 2009

Not sure if the hum is from the motor. I assume so but I am kind of new to this so I really can't say for sure.

Would the switch still be the problem from what I have told you? Could it be that the timer is bad? Or is it more likely to be the switch?

My washer is still not working..
The washer will fill up with water but when it stops all I hear is humming sound probably from motor and spinning doesn't take place. Seems like all the features of the washer work because the water will drain out during spin cycle but spinning action does not happen. Any thoughts of what part might be failing would be appreciated.

    Perhaps the timing switch??

One possible problem is the door interlock switch. This switch prevents spinning when the door/lid is open. If the switch is bad (open/off all the time) it sends a false signal that the door is open and washer will not spin.

Does the machine just sit there when it's not spinning or does it sound like it's trying to spin but can't?

Can you tell if the hum is from the motor running?

  • Samuel Charles Spriggs Apr 21, 2009

If the hum is the motor turning, it's not the door interlock switch -- it's more likely the clutch.

It is not likely the timer.

You can check to see if the motor is running when the tub is supposed to be spining by taking off the panel and watching the motor during operation of the machine. This can be very dangerous -- so, if you don't have experience with it, I would suggest not doing it. Service call would be in order.

Check the water valve for continuity. Also check the screen on the cold water side to see if it is clogged. That is what I would do.

Whirlpool Stylemaster 4217141 tub not moving wash/spin cycles

Sounds like the drive belt is broken or very loose. Take off the back and check the belt. If loose or missing, tighten or replace. This is usually done by loosening the motor support bolts and moving the motor until the belt is tight, then re-tighten the bolts. Replace belt in the same way.
