Question about Heating & Cooling

How far from the house should the outside unit be located?

I have a Luxaire 4 ton heat pump with a 2 stage compressor. I believe it's an AL5B or HL5B unit. My question is, how far from the house should the compressor unit be? Right now it is around a foot away and I have heard that they should be located further away than that so they get good air circulation. Also, when the unit is running on only 2 tons for heating, shouldn't the circulation fan run at a slower speed? We have a variable speed air handler and the air is barely warm when the unit runs in the 2 ton mode? Thanks, Tim

If your outdoor fan is a vertical discharge in other words if the fan blows the air up from the top of the unit then one foot from house is fine, but if it is horizontal discharge or blows it out the side then the airflow needs to be directed away from the house or the unit needs to be moved away from the house far enough that it doesn’t restrict the airflow.
For the blower running on high speed a 4 ton unit is usually 1600 cfm so on low cfm it may seem like high speed. There should be some speed taps on the indoor pc board and if you look in your installation guide it should tell you what taps you need to get the lower airflow if its not correct.
For the luke warm air in the 2 ton mode, the coil is a still 4 tons but the compressor now is only pumping 2 tons of refrigerant so the discharge temperature and head pressure will be much lower and that is what determines how much heat you get, so you will get less heat. The 2 ton mode is for times when you only need a little heat or cool, when you need more then you will get the 2nd stage which is the full 4 tons of heat.

Brand New 2 weeks old 4 ton Trane compressor leaks a lot of water onto pad

If the unit is running in cold weather than there is ice building up on the coils located outside. This is normal in that the unit is running in heat pump mode heating inside and cooling outside, After the unit detects the ice build up it briefly reverses the cycle heating the outside coils melting(defrosting) the ice which you observe as water on the pad.

The video gives you an example of the defrost cycle!

1-888-593-998eight. Goodman tech support. You should have your model# & serial# to both indoor/outdoor units if needed.

This link gives a lot of info but not what you are looking for I believe. Most 2 stage equipment will have a Y1 and Y2 at the terminal block inside the air handler. And a two stage cool, two stage heat would work for yours, it appears to be a heat pump. Now at the outdoor unit, if it is 2 stage, you should also see Y1/Y2 terminals. As far as a filter media? Hard to say.

I have a Carrier Weathermaker model #38tdb060300 A/C system. How many tons is that? It is 11 yrs old, capacitor exploded and compressor is blown. Needing to replace.

Looks like a 5 ton unit. However, you might be better off finding a R-22 condensing unit to replace the entire outside unit. Reason being, if you just replace the compressor, you get a one year warranty. If you replace the whole outside unit, you get a 5 year warranty. You can replace the outside unit with any manufacturer, as long as it is the same tonnage and type (heat pump/air conditioner/single stage/ 2 stage ...).

Rheem Heat pump 5 ton heat strip 10KW what

I would say this is around 75 amps of draw at max for both the compressor and heat units. . Therefore--at least 90 amp breaker, and probably 100 amps for good measure, and at least #4 or #2 wire to the unit.

3 ton condensor and 2.5 air handler

I hate to use rules of thumb but 500sqft per ton depending on your windows and insulation. you are probably ok with a 2.5 ton however it will not work with a 3 ton outdoor unit as you have figured out. depending on how long that ac has been in you may want to replace it with a 2.5 ton due to the damage to the compressor valves because of the mis match. or if the indoor is newer and the original system may have been a 3 ton then i would replace the A/H. and be prepared to replace the outdoor if the valves are to far gone. If the trane is a new high effiency 2 and the goodman is just a 10 SEER you may be able to have a txv installed on the trane unit and a kickstart device outside. but only if its a high effiency but their again if the A/C fails you couldnt have a high effiency 3 ton you would have to drop down to 2.5,

I entered questions for the split Goodman HVAC system yesterday. Two people responded. In response to taa43-Tom, I will get more local opinions & quotes tomorrow. Do you live in the Southeast? ...

Better off taking good money and put into something with a warranty. its probably a 4 hour job to recover solder in new valve change drier pull vacuum recharge If your system is freezing up it may not be the valve could be a check valve. low freon dirty unit all would cause the unit to freeze up is the company competent in working on heat pumps don't get some body that can work on you want in FIXED . from what you said in your 2nd post i am not convinced its the valve. Tom p.s i am in the mid west prices are not too far out of line.
