Question about Toshiba Satellite P15-S479 Notebook

WiFi Connectivity Problems

I recently replaced the hard drive in my machine and am in the process of reinstalling programs, drivers, etc. However, it still fails to recognize that there are any networks in range. I've gone through the Toshiba support page to no avail. I've checked to make sure the wireless adapters are running in computer management>services and that the drivers are updated via the device manager. Before I replaced the hard drive, it worked automatically without any problems. Any suggestions? Thanks! (note: my machine is a Toshiba Satellite P15-S409 laptop; it did not appear in the product listing below).

Re: WiFi Connectivity Problems

Hi, On several instances of this type problem, I normally suggest to check the particular WiFi Networking card that is used by the Toshiba laptop. This could be done by going to the Device Manager under Networking adapters. Thereafter go to the website of the chipset/wifi manufacturer and check if they have a connection utility. Sometime Windows WiFi Configuration utility fails to detect the existing network. You may have to use the config utility of the manufacturer. A method of verifying if your WiFi is working and if it can detect the network around it is by downloading, installing and running NetStumbler. Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.

I lost my driver cd

You amy need to reinstall the drivers for the video card you should reformat the hard drive before you install anything if you did that try the drivers next. You may have to manually create an Icon for the wifi or try disabling and re-enabling it then again you may have to reinstall the drivers for it as well. If it came with OS install disks that installed them to begin with try running the install but choose the fix repair not the full install.

How do i reset to factory settings on the toshiba satellite L25-S119

Hi bigbro1610...

To set you computer back to factory fresh settings you will need to format the hard drive and reinstall the operatins system and the drivers.
You will need to have the CD's that either you made when you got your computer or if your lucky you got the CD's that the factory furnished with the computer at the time you bought it.
Format the hard drive:
You do this by double left clicking on "My Computer",then double left click the main drive (normally C drive).
When the window pops open, you will choose "Format"
Keep in mind that once you format your hard drive you will loose all your files, programs, pictures, etc that you installed since the computer was new. So make your back up on a portable hard drive, thumb drive, etc.
2. Once the formatting of the hard drive is complete you will need to reinstall the operating system along with the drivers.
That will bring your computer back to factory new condition as far as operating is concerned.

Please reinstall the operating system on the new drive you kept and install ALL drivers. Even after installing all the drivers if you face any problems, there might be some other problem might be present in your laptop.

Hardware scan shows failed surface scan test, targeted read test & smart short self test timed out,how to fix these problems

These are problems that cannot be fixed, basically your hard drive is on the way out. Typically this is caused by drops, bumps, etc. while the machine is on.It has a SATA 2.5" 120gb 5400 RPM drive, I would suggest a larger 7200 rpm drive but it is up to you. You will also have to reinstall windows to the new hard drive.

My Laptop is running very slow and it is often giving problems with my sound.

try running ccleaner, download and install from above web page.
run the cleaner to delete old files and clutter, run registry to tune windows.
In tools section go into start-up and disable all programs, and then any programs that need to start on switching on will still start, but normally lots of other programs start up that dont need to, stopping these from starting up will speed up your laptop. Don't woory about disabling programs, when you want to use them they will start as normal

Not a driver, you have a corrupted program on the boot list. The safest way to solve this is to recover your files from Safe Mode and reinstall. Then reinstall your programs one at a time with reboots in between. If you feel something has changed in between reboots then the last program installed is bad, get rid of it.

In all notebooks and laptops you have Recovery CDs that you use in a situation like this. If you have the recovery disks, then insert the disk number 1 in to the drive and reboot. Follow the instructions and WIndows gets installed. You loose all data and programs. You will have to reinstall all of them including MS Office etc etc. But all the programs that came as OEM will be reinstalled. If you are trying to install WIndows the way it is done on a PC then you miss out on many facilities like WiFi, the Fn keys etc. You do not have to buy a new HDD unless the old HDD crashed because it got damaged. In that case you do need a new HDD. But the installation procedure stays the same.

Some files have gone missing or corrupted. Could be Windows files or driver files. You can't replace the device as it's built-in on the motherboard. What you can try is to remove the driver, restart the PC, and reinstall. If that doesn't work, boot with the Windows installation CD and choose to repair Windows. Try updating the driver too.

You can also try setting the IP to be static in your notebook instead of letting the router set it through DHCP.

I've had a problem like this before but it's not even the wifi's fault. Try disabling one by one your startup programs. It happened to me that a program tries to connect to the network on startup but since wifi takes longer to connect than ethernet, it crashes and brings down Windows with it.

If it's still not working, I suggest disabling it and just get yourself a USB Wifi dongle...

Smart failure predicted on hard disk 4

Yes usually that error means that the hard drive is telling the controller card that there are some problems with the drive.

Although the drive may still work, it is highly recommended to replace it with a new drive.

I would replace the drive but keep the old drive just in case, after re-installing Vista you find that there is additional data you did not backup or remember to backup.

Just replace the drive, and if it's a Dell laptop, use the Dell Vista reinstallation DVD, and it will not ask for a keycode to reinstall.

May also want to go to another computer and go to and click Drivers and Downloads. Type the service tag and go ahead and download all drivers needed (i.e. network card, sound card, etc.) so after you reinstall Vista, if there are any drivers missing you will be ready to install them.

Hope this helps.

Do you have an anti-spyware program on your machine? There are many free programs out there. This might speed up your machine a bit.
