Removal and replacement of a sony dsc f828 lens

Hi, I have a Sony DSC F828 with a scratched lens. I'd like to remove it and replace it. I have another camera with a good lens. I'd like to swap. How do I get the lens off the camera? There is only one small slot on the retainer ring. I can't find a spanner with only one tab. If there is a wrench I haven't been able to find one. I've tried using a circular metal ring and with electrical tape as a cushion. I couldn't turn the ring with friction alone. Life is good, Bob

I'm hoping to take the lens off the DSC F828 camera from the front. I don't want to take the entire lens assembly off if I can avoid it, as there are too many opportunities to get a wire crimped or not connected properly. I've taken apart the one with the flash problem so I know what's involved there. I've gone to the service manual and it does not show the front lens retainer ring removal.

Hi, The other camera I have is the same model. I have the service manual. It does not show the lens except as an assembly. I could swap the entire assembly. It sure looks like the ring retains the front lens just like an SLR, so I'd prefer to find a way to do that. The disassembly I've already done on one did not require any special tools. Bob

Fixing the front lens is actually an easy fix if you have a replacement part for it.
all the docs i got is this http://www.4shared.com/office/EVLC9T1lba/DSC-F828_level_2__v11.html
but as I'm repairing the lens it's not mentioned in that doc. you gotta explore.
in fact you need to remove the carl zeiss front ring label. (keep it, that's for the swag) and you'll find three screws, allowing you to disassemble the front element and replace it easily. if you can find an equivalent lens on a cheap one, it's worth trying. the AF range might be different, better or weirder but then, whatever works.

i'm still stuck with a closed shutter, tried to disassemble that lens block.
these ribbon cables... it's like it's all made of ribbon cables. it's endless !

Hi bob

This is not an optical SLR , where you can remove and put back the lens in such a simply way, you need to go through a complete disassembling, starting from the casing, and I also doubt that you can mount same lens on a different model.

The screws on the camera can only be undone with safety screwdriver provided to Sony authorized repairer.

If you want to disassemble you will have to undo casing first to free the lens.

Also get the service manual with full schematics here for $7.99.

Hi Watrosr,

If you wish, we can tell you a normal procedure. However, that might not help you because even a small mistake can lead to many bucks. You need to have proper diagrams in order to fix this. No one would be able to offer you all diagrams except the service manual for your model.

There are so many sites who would claim to offer schematics and service manuals, However either those are totally Fake or sometimes too costly.

The link for the manual ( Free ) would be :-

http://www.eserviceinfo.com/index.php?what=search2&searchstring=DSC-F828

I hope you would be able to fix it.

Any further help, let me know.

Thanks for using Fixya.

I need to replace the lens hood for my Sony dsc f828 . What size should I be looking for ? 55 mm ? Thanks

The lens thred is 58mm on F828, however a 58mm lens hood does not work; I have both a reverseable and a regular 58mm flower hood that extends 1/2" to the front of the lens causing dark corners on 28mm focal length. In addition, the lens itseft has built in receiver for hood as labled in the manual, I am thinking to get a 62mm or 60mm reversable hood and match up with the receiver on the lens

My DSC f828 sony camera's lens is loose. Sony says it is not worth repairing. Surely there must be a way to fix this ? thanks

I'm not sure what you mean by "loose". Does it still take good pictures? If not, then Sony is correct...the camera was introduced in 2003 and the cost of repair would far exceed the camera's worth.

How can i take black & White photos with my camera? Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-F828

The DSC-F828 doesn't have a black&white mode. However, just about any photo editing program will have the ability to convert color photos to black&white. Doing so on a computer will give you much better control over things like brightness and contrast than you would get if you just let the camera do it.
