You're going to have to edit your hosts file. It isn't hard to do. Instructions are available on the net here, or if you want someone to walk you through it you can try premium chat.

When I click onto a site on Google it is redirected to an ad site. I have run Spybot and Eset but it still redirects. Any ideas what to do?

hi maggieyoung, your PC might be infected with malware, got to this site, and download a small utility known as rkill, which kills the procedure of some malware related programs. Double click downloaded rkill application, a small window command prompt will pop up and just follow the on-screen instructions, then download malwarebytes, install a trial version, anyway its fully functional, and start a full and thorough scan of your system. reboot your computer, change the homepage of google chrome at the options menu..hope this helps

After getting into a couple of websites such as Yahoo,, this problem crops up. Some other sites are not affected. Pls enlighten me how to solve this.

If I understand you correctly you are having issues with unwanted "pop-ups" in your web browser?
Once spyware infects your computer it can create havoc on your system with pop-ups, random website redirecting and more.
I typically use three (free) programs and scan my computer about once a month to keep things running smooth. You should notice an improvement after the scans (which will take some time, be patient)

When installing these be aware of the installation options (sometimes they want to install a new search bar etc, you can disable these options)
Also after installation update each database to ensure you have the latest versions
Run each once separately and reboot after each one for best results.

I hope this helps,

I start the internet and I get redirected

There is a malicious software application called the Google redirect virus. If your system is affected with this resident virus, you will be redirected most of the time. Each time you click on a favorite to reach a website, you get IE8 redirect problems - due to the Google redirect virus. I recommend a scan to know if your IE8 redirect problem is attributed to the Google redirect virus.
Not all antivirus applications can detect it. You may use Microsoft Security Essentials for regular use (it takes care of several specific types of spyware) or if you wish to go for a one time scan, you can use MS AV online scan. Once you have completed the scan and have found and removed the virus, I recommend you use the best maintenance software for Windows to avoid the problems in future.
IMPORTANT: Please clean your computer for temporary Internet files and cookies prior to running the online AV scan as they may interfere with the scan process.

Read more: Sometimes the IE8 redirect problems are also caused by corrupt add-ons. To test this, right click on the Internet Explorer 8 icon and select Start without Add-ons.
If you can browse normally, it means the problem is some add-on. Start IE8 normally and disable all add-ons (Tools → Manage Add-ons). Enable them one by one to isolate the add-on that's creating the problem. You can disable or remove that add-on to prevent future IE redirects.
If you still get redirect problems, I recommend you uninstall the Internet Explorer 8 and download the "Internet Explorer Optimized for Google". This optimized version gives fewer troubles that include eliminating most IE8 redirect problems too.

Cant get on facebook

What notice do you get? Do you get an error? Or are you redirected to another page? try scanning with AVG and Spybot S&D for bugs/malware/viruses and then update me.

You will find these programs by searching on google.

Want to restore laptop to factory settings

Hi victoria...

You don't need to do anything as drastic as a system restore to your laptop!! Is your AVG a free version or do you pay for a subscription?

If it's a free version, this is probably the ad to upgrade to the full version. i don't use AVG so i don't know what their ads look like... you will find this happens with some free software... i know it's not spybot because i've been using that for years and it has no popup ads.

to get rid of the ad, you have to pay a subscription, or just bear with it, if you're happy with the free version, and close the popup.

you can also try another free antivirus program if you want... be sure to uninstall the other one first. Avira is good, and only pops up an ad when you update the program or virus file.

hope that helps!
