Boot into Safe mode and run your virus scanner.

  • charles raynor May 11, 2010

Once you get rid of your virus, here is a little trick for you....

After the computer is completely booted up, press ctrl+alt+del. This should bring up your task manager. When it is up, click on file in the upper right corner, then click on new task in the drop-down that shows. In the run box that pops open, type explorer.exe and click ok.

Well my friend it sounds as though we need a little clean up of your computer. Anything we clean out -you do NOT need. It is in stalled elsewhere. What we will clean out are only duplicates (clutter). If you have never done this it will take some time...here we go...START->PROGRAMS->ACCESSORIES->SYSTEM TOOLS->DISC CLEAN UP...now when that box opens up put a check in every box. Then click OK..then a warning comes on and says are you sure...say yes. (it seems to always indicate that you don't need to do it at this time...do it anyway)
Then the machine will do its thing...when that is done follow the same route back to Disc clean up only this time click on Disc Defragmenter and click on the word DEFRAGMENT and sit back and relax...it again will take some time pending on when or if ever you did it last. (Run this procedure once a week and it will take 30 seconds to do)
You'll love your machine again...good luck

I have an HP1110n....It acts like it is booting up, but I only see my screen background pic. No icons show up. The disk spins and is doing something, but it won't display ANY icons ! Help !

This happens when Explorer (the file manager - the program that makes all the files visible on the screen) doesn't starts at boot. Press Alt + Ctrl + Del to open Task Manager. Click File, click Run and type explorer. Click OK and the icons and the taskbar will appear. If it doesn't start or it's faulty in any way you will have to reinstall Windows.

Our toshiba laptop turns on but we only have our background pic with no programs on screen

you might have hidden your icons by accident. Try right-clicking and in Windows XP, "arrange by" and make sure there is a check-mark by "show desktop icons"
In Vista and Windows 7 rick-click select "view" and make sure that "show desktop icons" is checked.

If this does not help, make sure that Explorer is started (you should have the taskbar, start buttons, etc. in view of the screen. If not it might indicate a problem with windows itself.

I brought a computer compaq 6710b but have no password how do i reset or logon

  1. Click on Start and then Control Panel.
  2. Click on the User Accounts and Family Safety link.
Note: If you're viewing the Large icons or Small icons view of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simply click on the User Accounts icon and proceed to Step 4.
  3. Click on the User Accounts link.
  4. In the Make changes to your user account area of the User Accounts window, click the Remove your password link.
  5. In the text box on the next screen, enter your current Windows 7 password.
  6. Click the Remove Password button to confirm that you'd like to remove your Windows 7 password.
  7. You can now close the User Accounts window.
  8. Now that your Windows 7 account password has been deleted, you will no longer need to log on when your computer starts.

No icons on desktop

try to start in safe mode As the PC start tap F8 until a menu appears then choose safe mode If that works you could try the following
  1. do a system restore to a date before you hade the problem start>programs>accessories>system tools>system restore
  2. If that does not resolve the issue - try a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796 see if that fixes it- if it does - then we need to work out which startup file or process is causing the issue

I HAVE A WINDOW XP HOME EDITION AND WHEN I START MY COMPUTER THE ONLY THING THAT COMES UP IS THE BACKGROUND. THERE ARE NO ICONS OR A BAR AT BOTTOM OF SCREEN.

the icons and the bar(task bar) at the bottom of the screen are enabled by the explorer.exe file

it starts automatically but in your case it is not starting

to start it when your computer starts and comes at the desktop, press alt+ctrl+delete button at the same time to bring up the task manager

when you do this a task manager shows up in a window

in task manager window click on file, it will be located on the top left portion on task manager

now click on "new task(run)"

this opens another window, in that window type
"explorer"
without the quotes "" and press enter
this will bring you icons and task bar at the bottom of the screen

Desktop icons and start button issue

Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL

Task manager will come up.

Then click File, New Task.

Then type explorer.exe

This will load the things that you're missing. These things are probably missing because you have a virus. Make sure you do a scan.
