Re: power supply crow bar

Hi, if your computers manual tells you that you have a power supply fault you need to replace the power supply or take the computer to a repair shop and have them do it for you. Regards mistyman

Precision T7400 power supply sounding an alarm

Did you open the case on your computer? It may have an open case alarm which is a small switch typically located near the edge of the cover you removed. Make sure the case cover is completely installed, then see if the alarm goes off.

Your reasoning about the switch mode power supply being damaged is probably right.
Bear in mind that this power supply may not be the only thing that may be damaged in your computer.
You won't know for sure until you borrow a power supply and install it into your computer to see if it will work again.

The green light is blinking on the supply unit but it not coming on or booting up , i need to know if the supply unit is bad

Close examination of your power supply may reveal if the psu is bad.

When the power supply is plug in ac socket the green indicator led inside the motherboard will lit steady green. See if by turning on the cpu you will see some sparks in the power supply connector attached to the motherboard. This is a clear indication of a bad or shorted psu.

You can also smell if there is a burning inside the psu.

See if the fan inside the psu is working if not then its a clear indication of a bad psu.

Using a multimeter if you have one measure the dc voltage coming from the supply connector. Insert the black probe to one of the black wires in the connector. And the red probe to the red wire in the connector. the reading should be +12VDC. Put the red probe to the red wire and it should read +5VDC. Any readings below this, means bad psu.

Measure also the output voltage when there is a load in the power supply. Connect a CD-ROM drive or hardisk and measure again the voltage. Dropping of voltage when put some loads is a clear indication of a bad power supply unit (psu).

I hope this will help you.
Thank you for using Fixya!

ATX-300-12Z was hit with a power surge (thought we had a surge protector). Green light on power supply blinking at 2X/second. No power at USB devices (or anywhere else.) PC was on when surge hit.

There were 2 Switching power supply circuit inside the ATX PSU. There's a Standy PWM circuit whichSupply +5V to the PWM IC of the Main PWM. Stand by pwm still working or insufficient voltage, lower than +5V. This is the reason you still have Green light. Check or replaced small filter capacitor around 100 MFD 16V, open resistor or shorted diode that was nearest of the PWM IC..
Watch out for charge voltage on big capacitors.

Hp media center conputer wont turn on. button on front blinks blue to yellow and back, fan starts for 1 second, then dead. How can I check the power supply

1. Put it in another pc.
2. Check the voltages etc with a mutimeter, not an easy job and I can't tell you how.
3. Open it up (carefully) and see if you can see anything wrong like bulging/leaking capacitors, burnt bits.

Personally I'd find another pc to test it and/or open it up. If it is the psu then it's quite likely that it's blown capacitors.
Quite a cheap fix, if you do it yourself anyway (never paid anyone to fix em myself).

Plenty of info on replacing cap on this site and here's a link that covers everything, read it before you try
opening it or changing any caps

Bad caps

Could also be a motherboard or processor issue, and i'd say that is more likely, but the psu could be at fault..

Power supply led blinks but will not power up

My gateway was powered up and I came back into the room and it was not. It would not turn on so I checked the power supply with the paper clip jump method (which is the only thing I know how to do) and the green light along with the fan turns on. While it is plugged into the pc, it blinks with no fan running. The power supply is an ATX 300-12EB3. The Gateway is 556GE. Thank you for any help I can get on this.

check the twisted paired wires that are found inside your system unit..usually it has a color red, green, blue and white wires..check your motherboard wire pins usually located at the sides of the board or near the BIOS chip. IF you can see those wires, try reseat those wires( but make sure you have an assistance of a qualified technician to avoid wrong connections and to fry your motherboard).

However, brand name manufacturers often build proprietary power supplies or make up their own color coding, so I wouldn't throw out a power supply that supplies 5V where you think it should supply 3.3V. It's more likely a proprietary design than a failure.
