When I turn on my computer in the morning, often times my scanner is trying to copy even though I was not in the middle of trying this when I shut it down. How do I find out why & stop it?

- I've been here for a year and a half and this has only started happening in the past couple months. It opens the scanner toolbox and pops open the dialog box where you choose resolution, locations, etc. It also gives an error message, but I didn't write it down - I will next time. Shouldn't it tell me something about running a self test?

Apr 21, 2009

- I appreciate the help, and I will write down the code next time it happens and come back with that.

In the future, would you please pass along your assistance with out the attitude!

- Thank you.

- I understand completely - I apologize for not including all the necessary information at the beginning. As soon as this issue happens again I will report the error code. However, it does not happen every day. It did not happen today, and I am beginning to suspect it has something to do with the weekly scan/update my symantec does every Monday night. I promise - as soon as it happens again I will come back here with the error code.

Thank you for taking time to try to help me. I suspect I will be back next Tuesday with more information.

- Ok, as suspected, I am back today with a little additional information. I did a test last week Thursday & left my computer on over night. When I came in on Friday the CanoScan tool box was open, but nothing else. No indication of it trying to scan or anything like that.

Last night I left it on so Symantec could do it's scan. When I came in this morning, the CanoScan tool box was open, it appeared as though it was trying to scan a photo, and this was the message on the screen:

"Specify the program where the scanned image is transferred"

It had changed the location of the scanned image back to what I assume is the default location.

I hope I have given you enough info to understand what I am talking about - please let me know if I can provide additional information that might be helpful.

- Thanks. I will try leaving my computer on a few more nights this week to see if it is only in conjunction with the Symantec scan or not.

- Well, I left my computer on last night - when I came in this morning I found the CanoScan Tool Box open and the following 2 dialog boxes open:

Scanning of page 1 is finished
If you want to scan another page, place the sheet and click Next
Click Finish to exit.

I clicked finish to see what the scan was...it came up a blank sheet.

The other dialog box that was open was this:

it said ScanGear at the top & gave this message:
Scanner driver is running. Cannot go on stand by/Hibernate

I hope this helps.

- I used to work in a church and our office building was a former funeral home. Our computers were always doing strange things and we referred to "the ghosts" and the need for an exorcism on a regular basis. Perhaps one of these ghosts has followed me (haha)

Please feel free to fire off any specific questions that might help us get to the bottom of this. Also if I can check settings on different applications or the computer itself I would be happy to...I just don't know what else to check.

Could it be a sign that the scanner is on the fritz/dying? I have had a few instances when in the middle of the day I press the scan button on the scanner & nothing happens - I check all the cords, unplug & replug it to the computer and I end up having to reboot my computer in order to get the scanner to work. This has not happened many times yet, and it just started in recent months. I have not noticed any correlation to anything yet with this.

I can not think of anything else the might relate to this. I can try to see if this happens only when I use my scanner during the day - but I use it almost every day so I am not sure how noteworthy that will be.

I have checked my computer for viruses several times and it always comes up clean. HoweverI am not fully convinced. I get far too many failed e-mail messages about messages I never sent. Everyone I talk to & everything I read says these are merely spam made to look like they originated at my computer - I am skeptical.

- Well, here are today's dialog boxes after leaving my computer on last night:

ScanGear
Cannot communicate with scanner
Cable may be disconnecred or scanner may be turned off
Check status
Scanner driver will be closed

CanoScan ToolBox
Unable to open TWAIN source
Please check connection
Then re-start toolbox

Also the COPY dialog box was open.

I did use the scanner yesterday.

May 01, 2009

- OK- I hit cancel on the Copy dialog box. BUT - all of the above boxes just popped open again. I hit cancel again - we'll see what happens.

May 01, 2009

- These same boxes are popping open on average every 5 minutes. I have checked all cables & all are plugged in. There is no on/off switch that I can find on the scanner.

May 04, 2009

- I don't mean to be a ditz, but I have not been able to locate a power switch.

Thank you for your help! Perhaps it is time to get a new scanner.

The scanner is not trying to copy. It is putting itself through a power on self test to determine readiness for anything you might wish to scan.

- You did not mention any error message or dialogue box, only the action of the scanner attempting to copy something when you turn it on in the morning. This additional information, including the error code that you have yet to note is important when reporting a problem so as not to confuse any analysis.

Please note and copy down the error code.

You are not necessarily informed of a POST since every one of your preripherals including your CPU and your printer performs a Power On Self Test during which error codes are generated which tell you, as it did, what, if any, problems exist.

Please note and copy down and REPORT the error code.

- Sorry about that, as some other persons way less cooperative than you have been caused me to schmear from one to the other.

You didn't deserve that and I apologize, profusely.

Apr 22, 2009

- But if you do not report the error code after failing to inform any person of the fact that there was an error code at the outset, as I have been waiting for you to supply since yesterday, how can you expect an accurate diagnosis of your problem?

Apr 22, 2009

- I will be available, and will, in the meantime, do a little research to see if I can figure this out for you.

Thanks again.

- My first inclination is toward the idea of some kind of mysterious interference with your system, either by some person or persons unfamiliar with the system or some bot that is, for equally inscrutable reasons, trying to scan a photo of something or other and send it back to their location?????

Please excuse my paranoia, but having just now seen this, gimme a minute for diagnosis.

If you notice anything else, please advise.

- I really don't believe in haunted equipment, but anyone who does has an excellent case with your scanner, as without some other cause than you have disclosed, there could not be the effects that you have described. There is no such thing as spontaneous combustion, either.

Is there anything you have missed in ascertaining the description of events as you have stated them/

May 01, 2009

- I think you have a short in the scanner "scan/print" switch, borne of moisture or some kind of atmospheric interference with the continued discontinuity of the scanner trigger function while same is deemed to be discontinuous.

Suggest you save a little Green as well as Green the planet by shutting down the scanner at the power switch while not in use
