It could. That battery provides power to store the BIOS settings. If the settings are not right it could prevent the computer from booting up. However, if that battery dies in a properly designed system the BIOS will revert to default settings which SHOULD allow the computer to run.

I would try re-seating the memory modules. If that does not work try replacing that battery. If it still will not run try removing memory and using a different piece, or trying each piece separately if you have two now. Please post your results.

Click on Coin-Cell Battery in the right hand list.

1) Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger), and Battery.

2) Suggest lay a soft static free cloth on the table you're working on. Helps prevent scratching the table, and laptop.
Turn the laptop over, Battery Compartment facing away from you.

3) Remove the Memory Compartment Cover,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1520/en/om_en/html/about.htm#wp1175774

(Number 2 - memory module/coin-cell battery compartment )

The RTC Battery is that small plastic 'bag', that has a Red and White wire coming out of it, and ending in a small white plug connector.

(Real Time Clock Battery. Term coined now for CMOS Battery )

Replace battery, close cover, reinstall main battery, and AC adapter.

I have no led light on my e1705 when i press it and nothing comes on

Things to check:
1. AC adapter cord, esp close to the brick. Does the green light come on the brick? If not, replace the adapter.
2. Reseat battery. Check the battery charge by depressing the battery indicator button on the battery. Does it have a good charge? If so, then it could be the connection to the mother board causing the issue. If not, then replace the battery.
3. If both the battery is good and the AC adapter is good then you are looking at a mother board issue.

Power light comes on and goes off and machine is dead

Be certain that the 2 parts of the adapter are snug (disconnect then reconnect them). If still a problem, the power adapter is probably faulty.

Inspiron 5160 screen is blank

It seems to me the LCD cable is either not properly unplugged or LCD ha gone bad.
Connect external monitor to the laptop and check if you have the Video on the external monior. If everything looks fine on external monitor then you can get the LCD replaced.
In case system does not power up and there are no indications of power.
Here are the steps:
Connect only the AC Adapter and take the battery out.
Check if you have a green led lit on the AC Adapter.
If AC Adapter does not has a green led please replace it with a known good AC Adapter.
If the AC Adapter has a green led but still no power it can be the system board which has gone bad.

NO POWER AT ALL

Remove the battery and unplug the AC adapter. With the AC adapter unplugged from the system, plug it into the wall, see if the power LED comes on. If it does, plug it into the system and see if it goes out. If the LED never comes on, or goes out when connected to the system, replace the AC adapter.

If the LED stays one, see if the system will power on and give any indications of power at all (Flashing Caps Lock, Scrool Lock, Num Lock LEDs) If no power indication with a good ac adapter connected, then the motherboard is the next item to replace.

Either item listed above can prevent the battery from charging. So the battery is the last item I'd replace unless the system turns on with the battery out of the system.
