I would try a System Update this seems to solve a lot of "Don't Play or Stops Playing" Issues.
On the PS3 go to the 2nd Row from the Left in the Crossbar (Menu)
Scroll up to the Top and click on Check for Update.
If not then i would check how you have the system hooked up and if it is allowing 1080i or 1080p to pass through to the TV.
Only Component (Red, Green, Blue cable) or HDMI will pass these signals to the TV!
DVD's are 480i which the Yellow, White and Red cable they give you will not show HD!

I'm guessing your talking about DVDs and game disks, If your PS3 isn't reading PS3 games anymore but is reading DVDs then your laser could be dieing and you may need a replacement.
This means the DVD key went bad. If you flashed your firmware or have a jtag, this is an easy fix, but otherwise I would check craigslist or call Microsoft
If oyu have had it for a long time or its old the laser on the DVD drives eventually burn out from too much use. The games require a more precise laser to read it while DVDs are easier to read.
If you have a original xbox game try that. If it works it must be the laser.
It sounds like the drive is failing. If it will turn on, but can't read any media then I would suggest cleaning it, checking it for warranty replacement, or exchanging it at the place you purchased it, if it is possible.
Your laser is bad in the drive. When it comes to reading games, DVd's, music cds, it requires a different strength from the laser in your dvd rom in order to read them. If it can't read all types then the laser is definitely bad and you can either replace just the laser or the whole drive.
