More often than not, ISP's have their own settings saved inside the modem. so if you're going to change ISPs, the settings on your old modem might not work with your new ISP. settings like authentication and username and passwords, they differ among ISPs because they have their own system for authentication, etc. it is recommended that you get a new modem with your new isp.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of.(from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones)
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Goodluck!

My new/replacement modem: Motorola 2210-02, will not work with my old Netgear WPN824. I've tried everything I can think of, and I do not want to buy a new router. Any suggestions??? -Terru

If the modem and the router both want to be on 192.168.1.1, try setting the router to go to 192.168.2.1, or see if your ISP can provide you instructions for turning the router portion of the motorola off (Bridging the modem is the technical term). At that point they may be able to provide you with how to setup the router to work on your connection as the primary connection holder.

Hi, My sister is switching dsl providers but doesn't want to purchase a new modem. She owns a Thomson ST516v6 but it is apparently locked to her old provider. How do I unlock the modem for her so that...

This isn't possible as the firmware is pushed down from the provider themselves. It sounds as if your sister was leasing this unit and never returned it to the original provider, if she bought this unit then I would demand that whatever provider she previously had replace it.You can find a new DSL modem from an electronics store and then she will never have to switch again and she can avoid that modem leasing fee.

Trying to change from actiontec gt701 to actiontec gt701-wg. after new modem is hooked up, internet light stays red. switched by to old modem and all is fine. anyone know why internet light stayed red?

The reason why your internet light is red for the actiontec gt701-wg is because it is not yet configure. You need to access the gui of this router. enter the username and password for your internet connection. You can contact your ISP provider so they can walk you through for the steps on how to configure your new router.

The old router has green light because it was already configured by your ISP provider.

Router communication with cable modem

If you change service providers, connection type and hardware, then all your previous connection settings will not work, and they'll have to all be reconfigured.

Have you been given a new modem/router (combo unit)?

Did you previously have a separate modem and a separate router?

Do you connect your xbox via WiFi?

Go back to basics now. If your computers connect fine, then connect the xbox using an ethernet cable and see if it works. Then try wireless.

I have an old hp laptop and a cable modem internet connection currently on a new computer. how do i go about configuring the internet connection from one computer to the other?whenever i plug the modem...

OUR YOU TRY TO CONNECT BOTH LABTOPS TOGETHER TO TRANSFER THE INFORMATION.

THE CABLE MODEM HAS AWAY TO CONNECT TO THE NEW PC.

YOU NEED TO CONTACT YOUR INTERNET PROVIDER AND EXPLAIN YOU HAVE OLD CABLE MODEM AND YOU WANT TO UPGRADE TO THE NEW EQUIPMENT SETUP BUNDLE, THEY WILL SEND YOU A BOOK, CDROM OR DVD, THAT WILL TALK YOU THREW THE NEW PROCIDURES OF HOOKING UP THE NEW SYSTEM.

THE NEW AND OLD SYSTEMS ARE NOT COMPATIBLE IN ANY SINCE BECUASE THE WINDOWS VERSIONS, UPGRADES, SERVICE PACKS, WHAT THE SPEED IS, AND IF YOU HAVE 16BIT, OR 32BIT OR 64BIT SYSTEM, THERE ARE SOME 8BIT SYSTEMS BUT I HAVENT SEEN ONE IN A LONG TIME.

A firmware update comes from your internet provider. If you tried to update it yourself, it would get sent back to their head end and kicked back, reverting to the previous.

Contact your internet provider.
