Let's eliminate ghosts and goblins. I can't identify your unit. Give me a make and model number, maybe a noun like "receiver'. For example, do you mean Harman-Kardon HS 200?

As a test, locate the remote control window on the front of the unit, if it has one. Set it up to watch or listen to something then cover the remote window on the unit with a small piec of cardboard. If you can't locate it's infrared receiver for the remote just cover the entire front of the unit with something sufficiently opaque to block your remote. Try it to be sure the unit can't see it.

If the expected problem never comes back you have a stray signal from something else in the environment getting interpreted as a 'volume up' command. Then look around for other remotes being used, wireless devices, use your imagination. I used to have a remote-controlled space heater and my TV would sometimes shut off if I used the remote. Does the unit have line-of-sight to a nearby house? Maybe something next door (garage opener?) is interfering.

If it still happens and there are no other infra-red devices nearby you have a ghost.

Sony HCD-GT222 Hi-Fi CD and cassette deck with tuner, suddenly started to shut itself down at volumes higher than 50%, after three years of flawless operation.

It's thermal; protection is happening probably due to bad ventilation. Fuzz and dust can block air vents. These need to be vacuumed out now and then.

The volume goes up by itself - SABA M5115GT

This is due to the signal reception. Some channels are broad casted with strong signal strength. Therefor you will find the audio is louder than other channels. Also, if there is voltage fluctuation/surges/spikes that is also responsible for suddenly increasing the volume. Best is to put a voltage stablizer

My Kenwood DPX-4020 suddenly turns up to max vol

you probably have a bad switch. you need to use a multimeter and check the resistance of your volume up switch, if less than a few meg., the switch is bad.
