Question about Water Heaters

1 Answer

Honeywell water heater. It's about 2 1/2 years old. I went to press the red button because the water was cold and it never got hot. The pilot is completely off and it won't go on after I press the red button to restart.

does this heater have a dial you turn to align cut out so the red button can be depressed? If so, rotate the dial to where the red button can be depressedall the way. get a long match or a stick lighter then depress the red button and put a flame to the area around the long metall bulb. The pilot should light. Hold red button dow for a minute or two untill you can let go of the button and pilot stays lit. The main burner should fire up when the button is released. do not look in the combustion chamber keeping you face away from the access hole. you can hear the main burner fire up. Put all covers back in place set the water temp and don't leave any lit matches laying around, good luc.

Gotta do more than press the red button - there should be lighting and start up instructions posted on the unit.

Turn the gas valve button to piliot position, push it down and hold it, click the ignitor to light it... look thru the site glass to see the spark all at the same time, if it lights hold the button on the gas valve down for 30 seconds, let it up if it doesn't stay lit you need either a thermo coupling or a gas valve thermo coupling would be the first choice, the is also a filter around the bottom of th tank near the floor it needs to be clean that is the only soirce of air to run the heater

The pilot light on the water heater went out and the red light is blinking four times on the thermostat (Honeywell WV8860B1317). How do I get this to stop so that the pilot light can be relit?

The flashing light 4 times indicates high water temperature has activated the over heat sensor, and that the only remedy is to replace the gas control valve/thermostat.

Under the gas valve is a removable panel. On models of that era there should also be a second panel behind the first. remove both.

the pilot light should be clearly visible.

If no pilot, turn the gas valve to OFF. wait 60 seconds. locate the tubes from the gas valve to the pilot location. turn the valve to pilot, and with a long match or grill lighter lit, place flame at the pilot location and press down on the pilot button beside the main valve.

pilot should light. If not shut off the gas and call a technician. If yes, hold the pilot button for 60 seconds, then slowly release. Pilot should stay lit. If not, shut off gas and replace thermocouple, start relight sequence over. If pilot stays lit, replace inner cover and adjust temp to 120 deg. If heater fires up, replace outer cover. Done.

If heater does not light, replace gas valve or entire unit. Water heaters have a limited life expectancy, and if my recollection is correct your unit is 10yrs past warranty.

My heater is not getting hot i can not tell if their is a pilot light or a reset button i don know what to do with the heater it is very different how can i heat my water heater

Reliance makes gas and electric water heaters.
http://www.reliancewaterheaters.com/

Best way to start is to look at label on side of tank.
Label has serial number, model number, plus it will say if heater is gas or electric.
Reliance water heater age is shown in serial number: first digit is letter, second two digits are numbers: for example numbers 02 would be the year 2002.
If water heater is 8-12 years old, it might be time to consider new tank.

Gas water heater has 3 inch metal flue pipe coming out of top of tank.
Gas pilot is probably off.
Relight pilot light: Most gas water heaters today have instructions on side of tank just above gas valve that say how to relight pilot light. Instructions vary by model.
If you have gas water heater that is older, it might be easier to call a plumber.

Electric water heater has panels on front.
Open top panel and push in red reset button.
If you have electric water heater of any age, you can usually fix it yourself same day:

My 3 year old "Smart Water" heater will not turn on. No hot water

It sounds like there is air in the line, so open the gas line just a little for a few short seconds to let some gas out, after that, keep the one red dial on pilot then turn the other to about medium. Light the pilot by depressing the red button, then once the pilot is lite, continue to hold the red button for about 1 minute, Once that is done slowly release the button and then turn the dial that is set to pilot to on position and give it about 1 hour to heat up

We dont think our cylinder is on we have just moved in and have no hot water

The question is? I'll assume you cylinder is the water heater, right?
On the heater (water) you will find or see the red controls and a sheet metal cover over a hole. Remove the cover and this is where you light the pilot light. Press down on the red dial and turn it to pilot. In that position you will be able to press the red button . Geyt a long match or bbq lighter, then, holding down the red button dow for a minute or so and place a match or lighter into yhe area where the lines go The flame will catch the gas and lite the pilot if yo simply move your glame around. When the flame catch on the pilot, continue holding the button down for sveral minutes until the buld the flame isheating gets hot. Then release the buton and turn the main dial to on. The main burner should fire up. If not, and the pilot goes out, repeat the process. The bulb in the pilot flame is a thermocoupler that shuts all gas off if it doesn't detect a pilot flame, so hold the button down longer. If the pilot goes out when you release the button, The thermocoupler is no good and needs replacing. Good Luck_Ned_

Trying to find out if my new hot water heater is shot

The red button you pushed on the hot water heater was probably what is called a "piezo-electric" ignitor. It's normal for it to make a snapping sound and then pop back out. It sounds like you just lost the pilot light.

That being the case, do this:

Turn the gas valve on the hot water tank to the "off" position - it should be silver in color and down low on the tank. You may have to push it down to do this
Leave it off for about two minutes or so
Rotate the valve back on to the "Pilot" position
Hold down the pilot gas valve - it should be red and immediately to the left of the main gas valve.

While holding the pilot gas valve down, push the other red button to the right of the main gas valve - this is the piezo ignitor - push it several times in a row quickly

The gas pilot light should light
You can stop pushing the ignitor now, but continue to hold down the gas pilot valve (the one just left of the main gas valve). Let this valve up after about another 20 seconds or so.

Now rotate the main gas valve to the "on" position

Listen carefully - you should hear the main gas light and feel heat at the water heater flue outlet on top - don't touch it with your hand - you could get burned

If no luck, repeat the process until the heater re-lights

TIP - the instructions for re-lighting the pilot should be written on the heater

Just a potential diagnosis - the thunder clap, if as close as you describe, may have been intense enough to create what is known as a "draft inversion" that may have snuffed out your pilot light. The air pulse came down the flue pipe.
