Question about Canon PowerShot S1 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

No pwer I am a high school photography teacher who inherited 20 Canon PowerShot S1 IS cameras (going on three years old). I noticed a few last year that didn't turn on even when brand new fresh batteries were put in. The battery chambers are clean with no apparent damage. I am now up to 8 cameras with this problem. They won't even power up when hooked up to the computer for downloading. i even changed the date/time battery just to see but didn't work. Any ideas?

Well with a clutch of cameras showing the same fault - together with other queries of a similar nature I suggest you contact Canon on an Educational level- for a bulk replacement deal. There are obviously showing a common manufacturing fault

Unable to read mode. It remains in recording mode whatever mode I select.

After years of use these wear out just like anything else, if the camera is 10 years old it is going to cost you more to have it repaired than it will cost to replace it. 10 years is a long time, and the price for repairs will be sky high.

I want to buy canon PowerShot A470 7.1MP Digital Camera with 3.4x Optical Zoom...

Tha A470 is nearly three years old in a product area where products are replaced in two years or less. However, you can still find a few new ones at as well as used ones for much less money.

Bad CCD Sensor issue. Emailed Canon USA twice for assistance, but have yet to get a response back.

Don't hold your breath. Your camera has now passed it's design life and the ccd failure is common on all digital cameras once they're around five to six years old.

Yours was fitted with the now infamous Sony five megapixel ccd which had a manufacturing fault resulting in huge numbers of premature failures. There was a soft recall scheme in place whereby those who complained were offered free repairs, but the door closed on this offer last September as almost all affected models reached the end of their design life expectancy. Failures after that could not therefore be considered to be premature. There's a tiny handful of models where the free repairs are still being made (until the end of March) but the Canon Powershot S1 is not one of them.

The processes which caused the premature failures are now well understood and the manufacturing technology has evolved as a result, but it's still a fact that digital cameras simply do not last as long as 35mm film cameras. Premature sensor failures are still a common warranty claim and other parts such as autofocus motors, sensors, flexible circuit boards and others still fatigue and fail with age.

It's a measure of how little faith camera manufacturers have in their products that even a top of the line professional grade Nikon digital SLR still only comes with a pathetic two year manufacturers warranty and that's currently the best one available. You can buy additional extended warranties, but they just work on an insurance principle and generally are expensive. By comparison, for the same price as the pro SLR I can buy a vastly more complex brand new car with a seven year manufacturers warranty.

Getting the CCD replaced at your own expense simply makes no economic sense at all as you can buy a used S1 for less money. Ensure it's had the warranty repair carried out, and ask for a few recent high res sample images before buying (if they're too large to be emailed and you don't use an instant messenger program then ask for them to be posted to you on a CD). Some of the repairs were ham-fisted leaving material on the sensor which resemble water droplets on the images, always in the same position on every image. The repair only has a ninety day warranty so if the fault isn't noticed in time the camera usually ends up being sold...

Although the prognosis for your S1 is bleak I hope that you have found my reply to be of use and have a better understanding of what's happened to your camera. Please take a moment to rate my answer.

Cannon sd750 digital elph will not charge, either on charger or on pc. would this need a ew battery , it is two years old , advice please much appreciatd

As you've guessed, it's time for a new battery. Rechargeables are only meant to last 1-2 years, regardless of their use. Fortunately, your camera uses the NB-4L battery, for which there are many inexpensive generic altenatives these day. Here's some examples from Amazon. Make sure you read the user reviews before purchasing, as some generics are better than others.

Horizontal Lines after-photo.

Hi, I don't know if this is going to be your problem, but recently the Canon anounced a recall for Canon S1 IS, due CCD problems. Most people with this problem complains of lines on the image, or the image going completely black. Some are having their CCD changed, but most of the users are having their S1 replaced for a brand new S3. Contact the Canon Technical Support, and maybe you get a S3 for free...
