Question about Whirlpool ER6AHKXPQ Top Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Whirlpool Refrigerator I just had a technician replace the original start device with a 3-1 universal starter relay. The unit was manufactured in 01 and included a capacitor. I'm worried that this universal part doesn't have a capacitor and wonder if this repair will harm the compressor over time.

Yes it will. The original had a run capacitor on it. The 3-1 has a start capacitor. It will run fine for awhile but without the run capacitor it will fail in a few months. If he put on the 3-1 because the compressor was hard to start, then he was buying you some time. If he just used it to replace a failed relay then he didn't help you. The 3-1 has been used for many years and is a great product, but the compressors built in the last 10 yrs or so are not built heavy duty enough to handle them for extended periods. I only use them these days as a temporary means to get a customer by until I can get a compressor or they can buy a new fridge.

Emerson model#CR519B. The unit just stopped working. If plugged in a motor runs for about 8 seconds and clicks off; about a minute later it repeats. Help

I had the same problem with a small wine cooler. It happened to me twice in 6 years. Both times I had to replace the starter relay.

I couldn't find any repair facilities willing to work on these small wine coolers or refrigerators, probably because the bill would be more than the used fridge is worth. If you feel confident around a volt/ohm meter and electricity, you could learn how to test this and maybe fix it yourself.

You shouldn't do any of this if you aren't familiar with using a Volt/Ohm meter and can safely and confidently work around electricity.:

  1. Unplug the fridge
  2. I first tested the compressor with an Ohm Meter (see how with youtube video below or by reading how at It was good, but it kept starting and stopping within a few seconds.
  3. Basically my starter capacitor/relay wasn't working. It supplies temporary starting voltage to the starter relay in the compressor, then cuts off to allow the motor to run.
  4. I bought a Supco 3-in-1 on Amazon for less than $13 and hooked it up according to the supplied instructions. It lasted about 3 years.
Of course, the factory recommended repair is to buy the original replacement relay, but it will be more costly and harder to find.

I bought a Supco 3 in 1 Hard Start relay sized for the HP on my compressor. Mine was the Supco RCO810 (see link below).

NOTE: Before I replaced the starter relay and overload protection with a Supco 3 in 1, I learned how to test the compressor with a Volt/Ohm meter. If you don't have a meter, you can buy them online or inexpensive to free with a coupon at Harbor Freight.

Refrig model # ED2FTGXKQ04 replacing original run/start/overload relay with new part #4387535 not sure what wires to what terminals

there's a start device that goes on your machine that has the overload and relay built in it,part number 2188831 and it's around 25 dollars, comes with instructions where the wires go.go to the sears site and look it up you have to put your model number in and when the diagram comes up go to the one that says unit and you'll see the compressor and you'll see the start device part number 18 on the diagram and you'll see part 2188831.don't pull off any wires until you get the part and then you'll se what wire goes to the overload and connect it to the new part and so on.hope this helps you out.

Do you know where I can get a wiring diagram on a whirlpool side by side refrigerator model no ED5PHEXMB00? Mainly for the compressor. Freezer is not getting cold. I vacuumed the coils in front and...

Hello Thayden,

I understand that the Refrigerator compressor is not working on your unit. There are three possibilities of why the compressor is not working, the compressor is bad, the starter is bad, or the capacitor is bad.

To check the starter you will need to do the following (most common): Refer to picture at the bottom of the post
1. Unplug the unit
2. On the side of your compressor there is a cover this is the starter relay cover.
3. Remove the cover
4. Remove the wires
5. Remove the starter (top piece stuck on two rods)
6. Check if bad (shack it if you hear a noise/knocking it is bad and will not allow compressor to start)
7. Replace it and the bottom one the over load.
8. Reinstall in reverse

The Run Capacitor (uncommon that they go bad but possible)
1. The little black or silver box that two wires run to from the starter
2. Check to see if contacts or unit is burnt.

The Compressor
1. If you replace the above items and the compressor is not running the the problem is the compressor. This will take a licensed HVAC person to replace.

The above parts are inexpensive between $30-$50 at your local appliance parts store. There is a 50/50 chance that this will work and save you the cost of replacing the compressor or the whole refrigerator.

Thank you for choosing

Above Starter/overload and cover replacements (starter is in the bottom middle that you shake to see if you hear a noice/clicking)

Compressor will not turn on. Clicks on and off. Burning smell from underneath. Looks like from the "starter Device"

As the weather is getting warmer for many people their freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong. If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

If your refrigerator is running but warm, then…

Check out this tip that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

Evaporator fan was not working, so I replaced it.The 01 still goes out when I run a diagnostic,is there an overheat reset? Still not blowing...KitchenAid KSBP25FKSS Side by Side Refrigerator

Hi, there is no reset switch. The original fan was not the culprit. The culprit will be the microcomputer(PCB). This board routes the start signal, and power to the fans and compressor unit. The initial intervals are set be the cold control device inside the refrigerator, and freezer. The Microcomputer has several relays mounted on the board. One of the fan relays have failed. This will require you to replace the entire Microcomputer. This will correct the issue. The part number for the replacement computer will be 4389211

It is mounted on the compressor platform, under the control board housing cover.

Whirlpool Conquest Gold White Model# - GS6SHAXLQ03

The relay is the start device, but you need to determine if you need it,try to see if you have power to the compressor,is the compressor running,is the condenser fan motor running,is the coil under the unit clogged with dust,if the fan under the unit doesn't run it will overheat the compressor and it will go off. and if the coil is clogged the same thing goes.
Usually if the relay is bad the compressor will make a hum and a click noise but will not actually run.about every 5 minutes..

Whirlpool side by side, blowing hot air on both sides

First, you must determine if the compressor is running. The compressor is located at the bottom of the unit in the rear. Feel for motor heat and slight vibration. If it is cool then the problem may be an inexpensive start relay. If the compressor is very hot, the start relay could also be the problem or the motor has seized. Find the wiring diagram in the rear of the unit to replace this relay which should be availible at your local refrigeration supplie house.

Smell electircal burning

The Starter Relay consists of various parts depending on the make and model of your unit. Most larger Refrigerators have these 3 components: The relay itself, the Overload, and a capacitor. If you replace the Relay and if another component is bad then you would still have a problem. A service technician could test each component individually. The first move I would make is to use an Amprobe electricians meter and check the amperage that the compressor is pulling. If the compressor is VERY HOT to the touch and pulling a lot of amperage current, than you'd need to have the compressor replaced. THis is usually the case if the unit is approx 10 years give or take. This is a very expensive fix...usually around $500 or more so it's probably worth buying a new Refrigerator if that's the case.
