Question about Alps MD 5000 Thermal Printer

Error message-"printer had any motor mis-step error"

This is an Alps MD-5000Pthat had very little initial use followed by 8 years of dry storage. Following installation, the printer stopped with the error message, "printer had any motor mis-step error". I got it to work by starting over and tipping the printer 45 degrees forward. It printed fine but made a squeaking noise. Then I tried it level again and it stopped with the error message. The motor or something needs lubrication but I don't know how to proceed. This printer doesn't come apart very easily.

Alps md driver error

Hi,

For the ALPS printers, make sure you are using Windows XP SP2 or older. There are no Win 7 drivers and there can be problems with a Win XP SP3. Join the Yahoo ALPS group. In the files section they have a full description of the problem along with a work around. It usually is a conflict with the bi-directional communication and the LPT port. The LPT port needs to be motherboard based - not an add-on card.

I hope this works.

Make sure the little spring loaded side fingers that grab and hold the cart onto the printhead are not broken. With the unit off, slowly move the carriage all the way left then right to check for a good belt and free movement. Take the carts out and tilt the printer back and forth to see if something has broken off inside, check to make sure nothing has fallen into the paper rollers from behind.

I have an alps 5000 that won't pick up the ribbon cartridges?

It could be a serious error with the cartridge changer. Take a close look at the chagner for anything that looks bent or mis-aligned. Also, may sure all of the positioning sensors are clean.

When you moved, did you secure the print head and remove the ink cartrdiges? A Changer Error message is bad. Check the changer for any broken or bent parts.

Did you pack the printer correctly before moving? When you got the printer, it would have had a packing piece preventing any carriage movement. If you did not put this in place before packing the printer for the move, you have most likely damaged the printer beyond repair.

PLEASE HELP! Error Light blinks when powered up!

Inyadrms, Did the printer get hit or bumped around while in storage? The motor and alignment errors are bad. If you are mechanically inclined, remove the cover and look for broken parts or missing teeth on the gears. While you have the cover off, give it a good dusting
