Did a piece of the lint tray break off into the workings? Maybe stuff fell off the lint tray into the workings. It sounds like you're going to have to have the machine taken apart to find the problem unless you can see something down the lint tray opening, and retrieve it with a hooked piece of wire.

Dryer has Heat but NO AIR

Many of these have a belt driven blower wheel, could be a broken belt or it came off, There was also a bulliten out on several models where the blower wheel would come loose from the drive shaft, the fix was to re attach using a medium body thread lock compound so it would not unscrew again.

Please do yourself and your family a HUGE favor and DO NOT RUN THE DRYER!
You are at high risk for an electrical fire!

You already isolated the #1 cause.... lint buildup inside. The problem is that it gets inside the motor and the heater windings. It sounds like your motor is overheating and shutting down due to thermal thankful that it did so.

Your best alternative short of replacing the dryer is getting a new motor. There is a very high probability that the windings have been damaged by overheating. There are still a few appliance shops that rebuild motors, but in most cases it is cheaper to just replace, plus you then will have a huge comfort factor in knowing that it is new and not a rebuild.

Make sure the heater(s) are clean of all lint while you have it apart.

Lint not catching in tray and is clogging the roof vent

This is common on all dryers. Not lint screen will catch all the lint although some are better than others. If you haven't already, you will need to clean or have your home vent cleaned (with a brush that goes all the way through the vent). If vent is not cleaned the lint will back up all the way into your dryer and cause a mess. You have stated your vent goes up to your roof so you will need to clean it every 6mths to 1yr. Aside from this there is no fix that I am aware of. Please rate me after reading this.

Dryer makes a loud thumping noise when running

A thumping sound in your dryer could be caused by a flat spot on one of the drum support rollers. It can also be caused by a problem with the drum. An idler pulley on for the belt on the drive motor can also make a thumping noise when the dryer is running. Check to see if the cabinet is properly leveled with 4 feet firmly on the floor. Push down on opposing corners to check for play. Adjust the leveling legs if necessary.
Without a model number of your Whirlpool dryer, I am not able to provide much more help. If your dryer has the lint filter that pushes down into the top panel of the dryer, then here are a few tips for accessing the inside of the cabinet:
  • Unplug the dryer to disconnect electrical power.
  • Pull the lint screen out.
  • Remove the screws that secure the top panel to the lint screen housing.
  • Use a putty knife to release the clips on the front of the top panel (about 4" in from each side) that secure it to the dryer frame.
  • Hinge the top panel up and back.
This will provide to access to the inside of the dryer cabinet. Manually spin the drum in a counterclockwise direction and see if you can determine the source of the noise. If you need more help, resubmit your question with additional details and the full model number of your Whirlpool dryer.

My dyer is not turning. it makes a noise like the motor is trying to turn but does not have enough to do it. my husband took it apart, belt seems to be ok, but when he took off the top he can spin the drum...

Either the motor windings have too much electrical resistance or the start windings are shot. Replace the motor and install a new belt while your at it.
TIP OF THE DAY--To reduce the suction draft and drying time your drier and save some cash, remove the lint catcher and take it to the sink. Run water into it, if there is excessive pooling of the water (water not running straight through) then fabric softener is fouling the lint screen. Use a small brush and dish detergent to clean it and then shake off all the water and dry the screen. Remember this tip on future driers and you will make the dryer blower motor last much longer.

Kenmore Dryer

sounds like it may be overheating.. Might try to take apart and see how much lint you got built up on the motor... may be causing overheating Is this the ONLY time it makes the humming noise when you go to start it??? May also be the early warning of bad start winding or start relay on the motor
