Question about Refrigerators

2 Answers

Recently moved to a bush block with no mains power. Fridge starts and runs fine on 3 KVa generator. All attempts to run from 1000W(cont.)/2000W(surge) pure sine wave inverter unsuccessful. System successfully runs other loads up to 1000W including starting an older bar fridge with nominal power of 188W. Attempts to start Whirlpool, with nominal power of 100W and no other loads on system, causes inverter to trip on overload. This seems to indicate a starting current of about 20 times running current which is way above any other device I have come across. Typically 5-7 times. Is there some unusual feature of the Whirlpool that could be causing this?

    Is there any information available on starting currents that would allow me to specify a suitable inverter?

Usually relays are same size but might be different on whirlpool. Whirlpool is unique in all it's features including compressor and power supply voltage and and usage. They are designed a liitle different than the others.

Hi. I have a generator. Kholer. Once i load the voltage. Its shuting downg the it showing over voltage.

what you haven't mentioned is the capacity of the genset
( 500 kva , 1000 kva etc ) and the loads that you are applying ( fridge , tools lights stoves , etc) comment on this for a better answer

Generator had been running for 3 hours with a/c and refrigerator and lights (on concession trailer)when we experienced a loss

the unit has gone into over load
The total power requirement has exceed the output of the generator
for example if the generator is a 2.500 kw or kva then it will generate well at 1.8 kva or kw but it will not run forever at 2.5 kva -kw
When a ac is running the power requirement will be constant on the generator and with the fridge as well then the load will be at the maximum out put of the unit.
when the fridge starts again the extra load will exceed the max out put of the generator and it will slow down ( lights dimming ) and eventually go into overload mode
have an accredited electrician calculate your maximum load requirement for an external power supply and then get a unit that is at least 15.. kva kw better that required
generally fridges use 1000watts , ac conditions will draw over 3000watts and any thing else adds up . I am guessing that your generator is only 2500 unit

Have a newage stamford alternator c20a kva 15.625 bolted to a deutz model f2l912 engine and have tried to pull the 2 components apart but can only get the 2 parts about 1 inch apart anybody got the an

from what you are describing the generator is a 15 kva unit bolted to the back of a deutz engine
check the end of the alternator armature for a bolt head. it is possible that there is a long bolt going through the centre of the armature shaft and holding the armature to the crankshaft on a taper
some older units used 4 rubber blocks in the drive from the crank shaft and there is a plate to retain them in place ( They were a safety device to protect the unit from damage if the mains power come back on while the generator was running. The out of phasing would stop the armature and rip the rubber blocks up)

Just bought a s8000 3phase, straight petrol pramac generator, can I run my large 3 phase mixer and a 240v hand whisk at the same time?

Look at the name plate ratings on your devices, they should give you the KVA load of the device. Add all of these up. If the load exceeds the output of the generator, then it wont work

27 KVA is a huge generator and should work just as well as the grid. The only thing I can think of is the startup current, which can easily be 5 times the running current is playing havoc.

You might try tightening up all your lugs and screws in your panel. A loose neutral can create some truly weird problems.

My 3 kva generator do not produce electricity.voltmeter shows no voltage.I already changed carbon bushes and later AVR.But unfortunately the result in vein.

If the unit has sat a long time, the rotor may have lost its residual magnetism and then can no longer induce voltage in the stator. It will require flashing, a procedure where DC voltage is applied directly to the brushes for a few / 3 seconds (correct polarity a must) I also disconnect the brush wires. This will cause the field to rebuild. I would try that first, before suspecting rotor and stator

I would like to know if my Honda 2kva generator will run my air con dometic roof top B3000

I dont think so as this will be too much for the generator which has only 2 KVA as capacity.
Though the rated power is 2 KVA it will be safe to use it only upto about 1.6KVA.
The AC will require a lot of current on start up than in running and so it might no be good to have it strained.

What size compressor can I run

You would need 10 times the watts it takes to run electric air compressor,the start up takes a lot more amps to get it going ,then it will level off to the amps,what ever they are.That is the problem,getting it to power up,then it is fine,so you are looking at about 8000 watt gen.

I would take it in to a vacuum service center. I had a similar issue and they restored the Kirby back to new for $100, it's been running fine now for 2 years!

How many watts would you get from a generator rated at 11hp and 5.8 kva. thanks

kva = kilo-volt-amps

watts = volts x amps = va

Therefore, 5.8kva = 5800 watts
