E10 "Emergency USB" fault

Cannot use iRiver E10 at all anymore. Constant black screen with Emergency USB v1.40 showing.Unable to reset *PLEASE HELP* Can only see device on device manager but not in My Computer.

    Every time i turn my iriver E10 on it just freezes and then turns black, coming up with an error message "Player update required!!!" "Please Refer to the manual." V1.40

    exact same problem that the 2 people above are mentioning. It says in a black screen "Player Update Required! Please see manual" or something like that. And then when I plug the USB cord into the mp3 player, the words change to Emergency USB v1.40. Anyone know whats up?

    same problem as everyone else, black screen and emergency usb message, have tried to contact Iriver in melbourne but i get no reply, will never buy iriver again

    This problem means iRiver is dead. I took mine to the repair centre in Chapel Street Melbourne - fortunately it was just out of warranty so repaired for free - otherwise about $150.00

    I have this same problem. Black screen that says Emergency USB. I'll connect it to my computer with my USB and it will charge, but my computer will not recognize it. I can't upgrade firmware because of this.I tried resetting it and that didn't work. I can't figure out what's wrong and its FRUSTRATING!!

I have had the same problem many times and would like to see an update tothe firmware to fix it. Here is what I did. Rurn the lock off and connect it to the usb port and press the reset button (small hole in lower left of unit, use a small object like a staple. The screen should change eventually to the "USB connected" screen. Disconnect the USB at the PC to get the "Ok to disconnect" message. Pull out the usb cable and hold down the "off" button. Eventually the unit turned off.

Turn it on and then off to verify it is working.

This has now happened to my iriver twice and I'm thoroughly annoyed!!!! Especially seeing as how I sent it away for about two weeks the first time to get it fixed and that was only around Christmas and the damn thing is stuffed again!!! Apparently there is no solution to the problem - you have to send it off to the manufacturer so they can replace a part in it .. some chip or something I think .. luckily I got a 3 year warranty so I'm all good but without music for another couple of weeks *sigh* Looks like I need to pay JB Hi-Fi another visit so they can ship it off for me :(

I came on here to see if there was a fix, but clearly theres not. I agree that iriver is terrible. Mine is broke too, bought it in a second hand store so doubt te warranty is still valid. balls!!

I dont have a solution but i have had the same problem...i have managed to temporarily fix my iriver thru a series of resets. i held down the reset button for 10 seconds then reset it 5 times in a row. it doesnt always work but i have managed to listen to some of my music after this stupid fault occured, i am in the process of fixing my iriver and will post any success i have

How to fix iriver E10 it says on the screen is emergency usb


  1. If your PC does recognize the iRiver as a USB device/drive, there is an issue with the Hard Drive.
  2. If your computer doesn't recognize the iRiver as a USB device/drive and can read the files, there is an issue with the Circuitry in your e10.

Have you tried connecting the usb and loading an update on it at all?

Yeh that happened to my E10. Just go to your nearest Iriver store (you can find store locations on the iriver site) and tell them your problem. They should send it to Melbourne to get fixed. I got mine back a few weeks ago and its fine!

E10 Problem


You need to upgrade the firmware by using iriver plus 3 in the 'tools' section it should have upgrade firmware.

IRiver E10 - Error screen - Emergency USB


Hi There,

There are 2 conditions related to the e10 Emergency USB message.

1. If your PC does NOT recognise the iriver as a USB device/drive, there is an issue with the Hard Drive.
2. If your PC DOES recognise the iriver as a USB device/drive and can read the files, there is an issue with the Circuitry in your e10.

In either case, your iriver needs to be returned to the manufacturer. If in warranty you can get this repaired at no cost (of course).

IRiver E10 Player update required


I took mine to JB Hi-Fi where I bought it from and they're sending it to the service centre for me ... if your 1 year standard warranty hasn't expired you can take it to the place you bought it from and they can ship it off for you and they log all your details and give you a number so you can call and check the status of the repairs ... that's the only thing that will solve the problem as far as I'm aware ... they need to actually replace parts in the iriver ...
