It sounds like your skimmer valves are leaking badly allowing air to be pulled into the pump priming pot. Skimmer valves can leak around the handle as wall as around the seal between the top of the valve and the valve body. First tighten -- if this does not improve the situation, disassemble, and check O-rings -- replace bad ones, lubricate and reassemble.

As previous poster said get water above skimmer line to keep from pulling in air. With the multi-port valve in closed position, I fill the filter with the water hose first, then replace filter cap. With the intake valve set to skimmer, I fill the pump basket with a water hose until it will take no more. Then replace pump basket cover. Then take the garden hose running full blast and stick it down the skimmer. Then I set the multi-port valve to 'filter' and turn on pump.

If the pump is above the pool water level the it is unlikly that the tank will fill completely with valves open (which is ok). Most pumps are self priming and will pick up a prime with water level below suction inlet on strainer. Try starting on main drain again and slowly open skimmer line. Did you remove water from skimmer line and winterize(if in cold weather climate)during closing?.I know this sounds stupid, but make sure water level in pool is well into skimmer. If air situation remains after scspriggs' and these thoughts then prepare for a pressure test on skimmer line to determine location of leakage.

Why would it lose prime

Many reasons!!! Air is getting into your plumbing system, before the pump... On the suction side. Our at the shaft seal. Check all threaded fittings in front of the pump reseal as required. If above ground pump is easy to check all the way to pool. Which will include skimmer and main drain. If in ground, very difficult to check skimmer and M/D. Good luck.

Hello I have two Baker Hydro Skimmers in my 30 year old pool. From what I can tell the main drian was capped. Im only running on skimmers now. The drain is opened and I'm going to a side by side drain...

It is highly advisable to have a separate return line from any bottom or side drain plumbing. It is also advisable to have an on/off valve on this line. This allows for greater control of your filtration, assists when repairs are required and is most useful when seasonally closing the pool.

Hope this helps,

Hi to prime your pump you fill the strainer basket with water and make sure all connections are tight with no leaks. Once you seal the lid turn on your pump and it should prime. If you have an issue you can force water through the suction line by putting a hose in the skimmer and force the water through your suction line. Time to Open the Swimming Pool

I have a Jacuzzi AO Smith 1.0hp pump for an inground pool - my husband turned off everything to clean the basket in the pump and now we cannot get it going again. We filled up the pump to prime it, put the...

Ok I assume the pump is running? Check the lid again to be sure the "O" ring gasket is in place. If it leaks, it will draw in air, and won't flow full flow. Also check the lid for cracks. If you have seperate valves on your skimmer and main drain, I ususally close the skimmer valve and open the main drain valve fully. Once the pump is pumping full, I usually open the skimer fully, and only open the main drain about 40%. Another tip would be to close these valves on the suction side when you clean the basket, and do it rather quickly, and you won't have as much trouble loosing your prime.

I need to drain my inground pool with a heyward pump the water level is down just past the skimmer, do I need to close a valve so the pool will continue to drain from the main drain in the deep end? or...

You can try this but you run the chance of loosing the prime and burning up the pump. if the water is below the skimmer your already further than you should be.
What you need to do is get a submercibal pump. You can usually rent one at one of the big home centers, (Home Depot, Lowes...) or a rental yard. This will cost twenty or thirty dollars and that is a lot cheaper than a new pump. Also if your planing on cleaning the pool it will pick it's own prime so you can wash and rinse the pool.

How do i drain pool with hayward valve? setting is on waste but only drains hottub then looses prime.

you do need to set the filter valve to waste but you need to make sure the valve on the suction side of the pump is pulling water from the pool instead of the spa. Also, if you have a separate skimmer and main drain valve on the pool suction, make sure the skimmer valve is turned off. Otherwise, you will keep losing suction. If you don't have a separate skimmer and main drain valve, you may not be able to drain the pool with your equipment.

Can't get pump to prime

Is this the first time starting up this season? 1. Make sure pool level is up. 2. Check lid gasket and coat with silicone based lube. 3. Try to fill skimmer or drain line as much as possible. 4. If there ara two suction lines coming in then try to prime pump on just one of them. Gradually open second valve after prime is achieved. 5. If pump sits more than two feet above pool level then you will have to allow ample time for priming (it may take a couple of minutes).6. Make sure strainer drain plug threads are taped up. 7. If able to, try priming through another line.Good Luck
