I have copied and pasted your soloution and can now read it. The short cuts that wont open are the one that came already installed (Ebay) and the ones that I have created from my favourite and most used sites

The computer is 4 days old. I have deleted the shortcuts that I put on. Gone back to the browser opened them again and created a new shortcut and it still does the same. I still cannot open your messages by going to the link that you provide, instead Ihave to copy and paste the link in order to read you. Ian

What kind of shortcut is not opening? Are you referring to the Desktop shortcuts? If yes, there's a possibility that the link was broken.

What you need to do is to locate the directory where you can find the application, then right-click on the application and then select "Create Shortcut". Then, you may now move that shortcut to the Desktop by dragging and dropping it.

For Internet Shortcuts, you may follow the step below:

1. Go to the Control Panel > Folder Options > Advanced and change the Internet Shortcuts.

There could be a possibility that the target of the Web site changed. From time to time, the DNS server of the Web site changes. You need to create a new shortcut for the Web sites.

Kindly delete your old favorites and then open your favorite Web site and then create a new shortcut for it.

    Thank you.

Shortcuts have stopped opening on windows 8

What you can do is:
>> Go to Task Manager
>> Go to Process Tab
>> Find explorer.exe and press the End Process button.
>> Now your all icons will be gone. Do not afraid all icons will come.
>> Go to File > New Tasks (Run)...
>> Type "explorer" and press enter
This will bring up your icons. Now the icons should be working.
If this step fails, you need to re-install your windows, or repair it with windows installation DVD.

Tip

Create a Shortcut or Hotkey to Eject the CD/DVD Drive

Create a Shortcut to Eject the CD/DVD Drive
Right-click on the desktop or elsewhere and choose New \ Shortcut.
In the location box, put the full path to the nircmd.exe file that you downloaded, and append the "cdrom open" command to the end of it, adjusting the drive letter to match your disc drive:
"C:\path\to\nircmd.exe" cdrom open D:
Note the location of the quotes.. if you are using a path with spaces in it, you need to make sure the quotes are only around the path to the executable, and the arguments should be placed after the quote.
Give the shortcut a meaningful name, like Eject CD or something like that, and you'll have a new icon (read below on how to use the cd-rom icon as shown)
Create a Shortcut to Close the CD/DVD Drive
You can follow the same exact instructions as above, but instead of "cdrom open" just substitute "cdrom close".
Assign a Hotkey to the Shortcut
Now that we have a shortcut, we can assign a hotkey to the shortcut by right-clicking on the icon and choosing Properties. On the Shortcut tab you'll see a place to assign the Shortcut key:

www.yahoomail.com

To put a shortcut on your desktop
Method 1 loadTOCNode(3, 'moreinformation');
  1. Right-click an open area on the desktop, point to New, and then click Shortcut.
  2. Click Browse.
  3. Locate the program or file to which you want to create a shortcut, click the program or file, click Open, and then click Next.
  4. Type a name for the shortcut. If a Finish button appears at the bottom of the dialog box, click it. If a Next button appears at the bottom of the dialog box, click it, click the icon you want to use for the shortcut, and then click Finish.
Method 2 loadTOCNode(3, 'moreinformation');
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then right-click the program you want to create the shortcut to.
  2. Click Create Shortcut.
  3. The shortcut is now at the end of the Programs list. For example, if you created a shortcut to Microsoft Word, to find that program, click Start, and then point to Programs. You will find the shortcut, named "Microsoft Word (2)" (without the quotation marks), at the bottom of the Program list.
  4. Drag the shortcut to the Desktop.
