Question about Whirlpool GHW9100L Front Load Washer

Tub basket out of round or off balance

My Whirlpool Duet washer appears to have warped the tup or something has come loose. If you open the door and spin the tub, it does not spin on center and appears to be out of round be ~.5 inches or so. I don't see any obvious bends in the tub, and have no real clue as to what happened. I want to pull the stainless tub and check it but I don't know how to get it removed. Can someone please help? Also, is there anything else to look into that could cause this problem? I don't wash giant loads, no shoes, and always use HE soap. I just replaced the pump on the unit, and everything was working great until this out of round issue. Thanks, Sean

I did not tip it upside down, nor did I damage the unit. It has been running fine for the 2 months since I replaced the pump. I opened the front service panel and replaced the pump without even moving the unit. I am thinking now that maybe a bearing let go in the rear or something to cause the off center rotation.

No problem. The bearings appear to be fine IMO. I design government mechanisms daily for work and know a lot about bearings. I had a service tech come out to the house and tell me the shaft (that attaches in 3 places) broke off in one of the 3 spots from the inner tub. This messed up some of the front outer tub and explains the wobble. My wife heard the very loud pop as it seperated and stopped it immediately. I don't think the rear bearing housing is damaged, but I need to replace the front outer tub and tub itself. The repair tech said that if I want to do the work it would be easy, but he couldn't order the tub through warranty for me. Whirlpool won't let me get it through the warranty, just a service tech. So I am stuck buying a tub for almost $200 or paying much more in labor hours. The front outer tub is only $110 or so, so I now have a decision to make to buy a new washer or replace the parts in this one.

Guys, I had the same thing happen just this week on mine. However, the "great" Sears repairman came out two weeks ago and replaced the tub due to a crack in it. We washed 2 loads in it after he fixed it, then the LOUD pop. They are scheduled to come out again next week to look at it. My tub was under warranty, but I had to pay for the labor to replace both inner and outer tubs..labor was only $113.00. So there is a thought to have Sears come out and fix your problem..however, they may be creating another "a la" mine.

Normally when one fault is generated after fixing another fault, it is normally down to something caused by the person working on it, this could sound like you have dismantled something on the suspension, you say you changed the pump, (did you tip it upside down to work on it) if you tipped it up to work on it check the suspension legs to make sure they look equal, as the chrome inner drum can not possibly be that far out of alignment, the whole drum unit can be though, thats a different matter, check suspension and get back to me,if i have helped rate me please

if you can open the door, grab the inner basket at 9 and 3 o'clock and see if you can move it sideways, then again at 6 and 12 o'clock and move it up and down,if you can do this, then the drum spider trunnion is broken in behind the tub and the tub is loose which will require a new tub and trunnion as they are not sold separately at about $400.00

Whirlpool duet front load washer banging Loudly during spin cycle as if off balance

More than likely the washer tub bearing is worn out, this happens due to seal failure and soapy water getting into the bearing, the soap is very corrosive and the bearing fails quickly, this in turn destroys the drum vibration dampers and makes it much worse. The cost to repair this is about $400

When the washer spins with a heavier load like towels or jeans, it makes a horrible sound off and on. It sounds like something rough scraping against another rough surface. Is this something my HVAC...

Sounds like the bearings may be going out. Quick check for bad bearings: Open door, grab spin basket lip, yank on it; up and down works best. If you can get your fingers on the white plastic outer tub lip try to determine if the metal spin basket is moving independently from the outer tub in any motion other than round and round. If so you're rear bearings are becoming worn and will be especially noisy under a heavy load.

Overfilling loads can cause small objects like pins, coins, and small socks to get between the tub abd Basket of your washer.

The basket is held onto the rear half of the outer tub simply by the bolt to the main pulley.
Remove the bolt, remove the pulley, and the basket shaft should slip right out of the bearings of
the rear tub.

Simply shining a light around between the basket and outer tub should confirm that there is something in there, since you have access to do this with
the front tub removed. Go ahead, remove the pulley and bolt, and if
the basket comes out, then check everything out.

If it doesn't, don't try pounding it out; stop there and go to plan B, which is a new basket
and tub assembly.

During the spin cycle the machine made a loud thud and now during spin cycles the machine pounds and slams yet when the machine is off the basket spins freely and without obstruction... any suggestions?...

It is doutful the basket or drum has warped. With such a loud thud and still doing it when you use the machine, it appears one of the balance springs or its mounting has broken loose. This will require opening the shell of the machine. Some models have a 3 point suspension, others have a 4 point suspension. This broken suspension point will account for the fact that you can spin the drum feely by hand yet it goes crazy when spinning with a load.
Because it is a front load unit, you must be careful or have a certain level of knowledge to open the unit and reclose it with the drum, seal, and facing all lining-up and not binding. As always, unplug the unit before taking it apart. Good Luck. Macgivor

Gasket came loose and rapped around laundry-tub seems loose

if your metal ring (clamp) came off it is most likely due to you shocks or the spring at the top are worn out and need to be replaced. this will happen more often if the cycles are off balance or the washer is over loaded
