Dim screen, burning elec smell, fan/ht snk foil blistered

Dv6000... display screen went very dim, almost blackened out. Removed power cord and battery. Tried reboot a few times. Returned to normal after several tries, but immediately emitted a burning electrical smell. Removed power and battery and disassembled laptop. Fan/heat exchanger foil was blistered where it contacts the AMD processor. Don't know if both parts are bad or what. Any ideas?

L355-S7902 wont power on

The DC Power Jack is connected to wires that end in a plug. The entire affair is referred to as a DC Power Harness,

http://www.amazon.com/POWER-CABLE-TOSHIBA-SATELLITE-L355-S7902/dp/B005FD3M16

In the Clarification I stated earlier, the link I posted stated about the $3 DC Power Jack fix. It had another link,

http://www.insidemylaptop.com/repair-damaged-power-jack-toshiba-satellite-l305-l355-laptops/

Means to me that the old DC Power Jack, may have been removed from the DC Power Harness, and the $3 DC Power Jack soldered on.

1) Both red wires, (2 - Power), and black wires (2 - Ground) were used?
2) Are you sure the solder joints are good? Not cold solder joints?

3) The DC Power Harness cable is plugged in tightly to the motherboard?
4) Was a continuity test done with a multimeter, of the DC Power Harness itself after the new jack was installed?

Just to get the obvious out of the way;

5) AC adapter (Charger) was tested? Center hole is Positive, outside cylindrical metal shell is Negative. DC Voltage scale. Looking for 19 Volts (DC)

6) You FOLLOWED Anti-Static Precautions?
What method did you use?

AC adapter checks out, modified DC Power Harness checks out, the problem is in the power section on the motherboard.

Power MOSFET's determine if the Battery needs a trickle charge, full charge, or no charge at all.
Also determines if the laptop is to just run off of the Battery, or AC adapter.

Check the motherboard near the area the DC Power Harness plugs in, for burned, blackened, or blistered Power MOSFET's.
Using HP Pavilion dv6000 series, and Pavilion dv9000 series Notebook PC's, as an example,

http://mayohardware.blogspot.com/2010/04/important-parts-on-dv6000-and-dv9000.html

Using a Fairchild Semiconductor International - FDS6679 - Power MOSFET as an example,

http://www.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=FDS6679

1 Dollar and 1 Penny

On the Mayohardware blog also look at the second photo down, with the Alpha and Omega Semiconductor - AO4407 - Power MOSFET, circled in Yellow.

Look to the right of the AO4407. The small rectangular shape to the right, with the dark wide band on it is a Ceramic Capacitor.
There is one above it, one above that one, and one to the right. Just some of the ceramic capacitors.

Need to pay close attention to the ones in the area immediately surrounding the Power MOSFET's, in the power section.
See if any are burned, blackened, or blistered.

Just one bad one will do it.

NOT the ceramic capacitors used, just examples,

(Scroll down)

You don't need a Soldering Station. That type of beveled tip, and a low Wattage soldering iron.

(Plus desoldering braid, {Solder Wick}, .030 Rosin Core solder, Rosin flux, damp sponge, patience)

Or hot air and flux,

[ ......game out of the cdrom that was jammed in upside down?
I would have removed the one Philips head screw from the bottom of the laptop, slid the optical drive ('cdrom') out, and removed the small screws from it's cover, then removed the disk.

Like your idea better ]

Samsung n145 will not power up

Related to a Samsung Np-n145 Notebook PC:

Plug the laptop into power for 24 hours. See if the Battery charges up.

Next test, or have tested, the AC adapter (Charger) See if it is putting out 19 Volts -> DC.
Know someone with a multimeter? I can guide you in testing.

AC adapter is good? Things go downhill rapidly here.
The next problem could be a DC Power Jack.

The DC Power jack is the jack on the laptop, that you plug the AC adapter into,

1) The DC Power jack may be broken
2) The solder joints holding it to the motherboard may be cracked. Poor connection to motherboard.

The DC Power jack can be replaced, or it's solder joints re-soldered.

DC Power jack proves to be okay?

Power MOSFET's have gone bad. The next link, is an article that deals with bad Power MOSFET's in an HP laptop. Used for an example,

http://mayohardware.blogspot.com/2010/04/important-parts-on-dv6000-and-dv9000.html

Let's hope it's a bad AC adapter

Bad COF ic on buffer board. Can usually tell which one's bad. It will look overheated or a hole in top of ic. Look at upper and lower buffer boards to see which ic is bad. Can get from Encompas Parts, Recommended replace y sustain with buffer.

I have power to my hp pavillion tx2000, but its not booting up, and no screen, but all the lights come on, apart from the caps lock light that stays off, i have removed the battery power and ac but still...

  • Check your power cord & adapter.
If its working then check the battery, reseat the battery & check.
If available then check with another battery
If no, then remove the battery & switch on the PC in AC mode.
Check if battery charging indication or AC power on indication is glowing. if not then need to change ur motherboard.
If indication is OK, but could not power ON then check ur RAM for any loose connection or dust. clean & reinstall.
If still no display, connect an external monitor, check if display is comming.
If Display is coming then your LCD need to replace.

Discolored terminal on cord

Check the dryer power cord for any signs of melting or charring. It could just be a loose connection. Then.....

Check the wall plug - there's a possibility the wall socket is either worn or the wiring to the socket isn't tight. The socket will need to be removed to check this, so make sure the power is off first.

I was using my eeepc and it stopped running no lights no lcd nothing what do you think the problem is?

Often it is very likely your portable battery, or charger / charger cords went bad.

Try running your laptop with no battery installed that is the battery removed. If the battery is very bad your PC may not power up at all even when plugged in for safety.

If you do not get any lights at all (LCD screen or others) running only on your charger, please test your charger on another similar laptop or have it checked at a store/ or with a meter. It may be out. A cord or wire may be broken on it (common problem also) - physical parts and batteries wear first.

You may also try another battery if available. Look for any signs of or smells of burning or overheating on any parts for more clues.

Replace any bad battery or charger.

SAMSUNG HT-X50

Do you smell anything burning. This happened to me and I cut it back on. It stayed on for 30 secs or so and did the same thing. After doing this 2-3 times, I smelled a burning. Being a member of the Fire Dept, I didn't want to see my buddy's coming to the house, so I unplugged it. The next day, I took it apart and there was a burnt resistor or something under neath the fan. I took it back and they gave me a new receiver, but I'm expecting the same with this one.

Dryer smelled of burning plastic, smoked stopped turning on

check the power cord itself, if you see on the back side of the cord a burnt or blackened spot then the cord is the issue
