Question about Canon PowerShot S1 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

Flashing horizontal stripes on screen while shooting

My camera shows flashing horizontal stripes on the screen (while the camera is set on shooting mode). Pictures are like the screen shows (on browse-mode).

Earlier, as the camera was functioning as it should, these pictures on browse-mode can still be found and they´re fine! So, the screen module is not broken. So, what could be wrong in my cam? i try using my camera to take pictures, but then the purple distorting lines show up and it will not allow me to take any pictures. i am very frustrated and i also looked through the instruction details posted on this website, but it is too hard to comprehend.
I would appreciate if there was a quicker and easier way.
Thank you.

my father has the same camera and said blue lines would flash across screen. today he went to use the camera and cannot. He can only access the browse/view photos already taken screen. Did you find a fix to your problem? Meredith

My husband's camera just did the same thing while on vacation this week. He shot a few pictures, turned it off and when he turned it back on a few minutes later, it started flashing the horizontal lines

The following is from Canon. You can send the camera back for free repair. Hope this helps.

It has recently come to our attention that the vendor-supplied CCD image sensor used in this Canon digital camera may cause the following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode, the LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted image or no image at all. While reports of this malfunction have been rare in the United States, we have determined that it may occur if the product is exposed to hot and humid environments.
Based on the information you have provided, it appears that you may have encountered this issue. To determine if the CCD (image sensor) is working properly, please follow these steps:

1. Insert a memory card with known good images on it into the camera.

2. Power the camera on to the Playback mode.

3. Press the DISPLAY (DISP) button to enable the LCD panel, and observe the LCD.

a. If the images are displayed properly, please proceed to step
four.

b. If the images are not displayed, or a "NO IMAGES" message appears, please ensure that the memory card contains known good images.

c. If the card contains known good images, and the issue persists with a second memory card, the camera will require service.

4. Switch the camera to the Camera mode. You may use any shooting mode(i.e. Auto, Manual).

5. Press the DISPLAY (DISP) button to enable the LCD panel.

6. Point the camera at a well-lit scene and observe the LCD and/or viewfinder. If the scene the camera is pointed at appears on the LCD and/or viewfinder, the CCD is operating properly. If the LCD and/or viewfinder remain black, the camera requires service.

Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, products exhibiting the above-mentioned
malfunction if the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair.

We would like to send you a pre-paid shipping label so that you may send your camera to our Factory Service Center for repair. Please reply to this message with the following information so we may send the label:

Why is line flashing on monitor?

If the pictures have lines or marks in them when loaded up on a computer screen then it's a fault with the image sensor inside the camera, if they do not then it's a fault with the lcd screen on the camera, either way it's not an easy fix and will probably cost more than a new camera

HORIZONTAL STRIPES ON PICTURE

Hi!
Turn on the camera
Pull the lens at maximum zoom
Turn off the flash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shoot the picture - look into the lens.

If no motion picture shutters in the lens:
1. Faulty flex cable shutter
2. Faulty valve solenoids
etc.
Requires repair of the shutter assembly in the lens

If you saw the shutter and blurry pictures as paint - matrix defective - Replace the camera matrix.

When you say 'played back', do you mean viewed on the camera screen, or after downloading to your computer ? If the latter, it could be to do with the software you are using - try FastStone.

Daytime photos are very white and has horizontal lines.

Hi!

If ever you haven't tried resetting the camera, please try it first. It's possible that you or somebody using the camera may have set something on the camera's setting to have this result ( this is based on my own experience :D ).

Anyway, here's how you reset your camera:

a913d74.jpg
This will basically set the camera to default settings. If there is no hardware problem with the camera, this will correct the problem. However, if the problem persist after the reset , you may want to bring the camera in a service center for repair.

I hope that helps.

Good luck and have a nice day!
