2 Answers

Blank Screen I have and IBM Thinkpad R40. Its been working fine for the five years that I have been usin g it. Yesterday the laptop was turned on the whole night and when i woke up in the morning, i saw a blank screen, so I just swtched it off. But when I tried to switch it on again, the screen lights up but remains blank. I can hear the start up music and all that but the screen is blank. I connected the laptop to my desktop monitor and it works fine. Any ideas on what I should do??

Ccfl ( cold cathode flouroscent lamp ) is the backlit feature of the lcd panel. If you see a blank screen but do see the output on the external monitor then you sure have to take it to the hardware tech to get the inbuilt LCD panel checked. it seems to be a electronic failure. Thanks Ashish.

The display on my ibm thinkpad r40 is black after initial dim ibm screen. External monitor works fine though. This happened immediately after I used my ibm with a projector this morning? Fn F7 does not...

The problem youve discribed does seem to point to your back light has failed on the laptops lcd display, i dont know exactly how this would accure just using a projector though, go into bios again and try loading factory settings.

This problem could also be the inverter if you cant make out even a slight image on the screen.

let me know what happens. thanks

I cant get a wireless connection on my IBM R40 using a Linksys G

I had the same problem with my R40 (2681) and a Linksys G router. The specs on IBM's/Lenovo's site indicate that the wireless card in the R40 only handles certain types of wireless encryption. The newer types (e.g. WPA) won't work on it and they are usually the standard on routers nowadays. My Linksys G router works fine with the R40 with WEP or with no encryption. Not ideal, but that's life with an old laptop.

Problem with ibm thinkpad r40

The IBM beep code error 1 long 2 short beeps means there is a video card fault. Reseat your RAM because the video card uses some of the RAM. If it doesn't work then the video chip on the motherboard is faulty, the only way to fix is to replace the motherboard - this may not be a cost effective solution.
Connecting an external monitor to the laptop won't work because the video card also sends data to the video port.

Hi, May be the harddisk is not recognizing. Restart your laptop and go for BIOS and check whether the harddisk is recognized.

The display screen has turned black

When you connected the external monitor thto the laptop did it display?

If so then you have to reset the monitor port. Hold down the function key and find the FKEY that shows a picture of a monitor. Press that until you get the laptop screen back.

Typical use is:
  • 1 press = external monitor
  • 2 presses = laptop and dual monitor
  • 3 presses = just the laptop screen
