Hi Wendy,
According to the user guide for your printer, the only 2 cartridges that you can use is CL51 and CL52. From my references, the PG-40 cart doesn't go to your printer. If you are having trouble with your printer printing black, then you would have to replace the CL-51 Cart. I would make sure that the heads are clean before running out for a new cartridge. You should be able to do a "Printhead Clean" from the settings.
Hope this helps.

I just replaced both the black and color cartridges (empty) with new replacement cartridges - Office Max brand. I couldn't get any e-mails or documents to print, although I could get ink on paper when running the Nozzle Check and Print Head Allignment. That doesn't make sense!
I e-mailed Canon Tech Support and was told to use only Canon cartridges. I bit the bullet, went out and bought another black cartridge - this time Canon brand, installed it ,and my printer now works - including color printing.
The color cartridge is still office Max brand. My printer now says I have black ink, but still says the color ink is low (even though it's full).
Conclusion: The Canon printer only works properly with Canon cartridges!
