Is it safe to use a printer when the toner cartridges blew up in shipment?

I bought a dell laser 5100 (?) printer on e-bay, and when it came, it appears that the toner cartridges have exploded, or at least leaked. Is it safe to clean everything off, and use the printer? I don't want the drum to scratch (that's why I'm getting a new printer in the first place) jane lodifarms.com

Error code 093-921


If you are seeing any or all of these error codes on the Dell 3130cn Laser Pinter that there is a Firmware Update to address this issue. However, the firmware cannot be applied when there is an error present, so first try reseating all toners. You may need to repeat this several times before errors are cleared. Once error-free, download the Firmware from the Dell Support website and apply.

Reset the Cyan toner properly.

  1. Verify all packaging has been removed from the printer cartridge. This includes any tape or red handles. Also verify the toner cartridge is properly installed.
  2. Remove the toner cartridge and clean the toner housing of any excess toner with a clean dry cloth. Reseat the toner cartridge when finished cleaning.
  3. Check that all toners are Dell branded and not refills. Take note of all PPIDs (Serial Numbers). Check that all toners are for the correct model
    • If any toners are non Dell, swap with another toner
  4. Run diagnostics on the toner cartridge sensor.
    1. Power off the printer.
    2. Hold down the and buttons on the printer and power the printer on.
    3. Release your fingers from the keys when the message Diagnosing... appears.
      Customer Mode and ESS Diag display.
    4. Press the button until IOT Diag appears and press the button.
      On the LCD, Digital Input appears.
    5. Press the button until Digital Input appears and press the button.
    6. Press the or button until DI-8 for (yellow) DI-9 for (Magenta) DI-b for (Cyan) and DI-a for (Black) appears and press the button twice. It is only necessary to run the diagnostic on the toner cartridge to which the error applies
    7. Open the front cover. (Figure 1)

    8. Remove and replace the toner cartridge. Every time the toner cartridge is reseated, the counter on the Operator Panel will increase by 1.
      • If the diagnostic does not increase by 1 then replace the toner cartridge.
      • If the diagnostic does increase by 1 and the error persists, Please contact Dell Technical Support for further advice.

remanufactured toners, or off brand toners are sometimes not compatible. I would contact the dealer you bought the toner from and tell them the cartridge is defective and demand an exchange or refund.

If they all have leaking, I would bet its the fuser causing the issue. It sounds like its not sealing the ink properly, thus it looks like its leaking.

Means the Yellow Toner Cartridge is not communicating with the printer. If you've installed a third party yellow toner cartridge, go to the Dell Printer Configuration Web Tool to set the toner to non-Dell toner. If it is a Dell cartridge, the procedure is to turn the printer off, wait 10 seconds, and turn the printer back on.

Prints faint copies


If the print rubs off the page, this means the toner is not being fused to the page. Fused......this is done by the fuser. This would have nothing to do with light print.

The dell (1600n and 1815n /1815dn) printer drivers has a toner saver mode, which can contribute to light print.

To turn Toner Save Mode off, (Windows XP) perform the following steps:
  1. Click the Start button, click Settings, and then click Printer and Faxes.
    The Printers and Faxes window appears.
  2. Right-click Dell Laser MFP 1600n, 1815dn, and left-click Printing Preferences.
    The Dell Laser MFP 1600n, 1815dn Printing Preferences window appears.
  3. Click the Advanced button.
    The Dell Laser MFP 1600n, 1815dn Advanced Options window appears.
  4. Click to highlight Toner Save.
  5. Click the drop-down list and change it to Off and click OK.
  6. Click OK.
One thing that you mentioned in your post "it takes the printer forever to warm up". The fuser does have to reach operational temperature in order for it to fuse the toner to the page. So it is possible that you are having fuser problems, because of the time it is taking for it to warm up. Another thing that can contribute to the warm up time is not plugging the laser printer directly into a wall outlet. This would be true for any laser printer, not just a Dell laser printer. The low voltage power supply is what works the fuser, along with sensors and other motors in the printer.

Replacing the fuser and or the low voltage power supply in this model of printer is not an easy task. If using a Dell branded toner cartridge and checking the toner saver mode does not fix the issue. Then you would be looking at more expense then the machine would possibly be worth.

Look at the toner cartridge.

There is a small plastic locking collar on the end of the spindle of the rubber Developer Roller (it's this that carries the toner to the drum). I'd bet that this locking collar is loose, misplaced, or missing.

Leaking toner on the right of the printer is usually caused by this.

The other possible cause is a partially detached seal underneath the Developer Roller.

Recently changed the black toner cartridge in the Dell 3110cn printer. This past week when I print the entire page is being printed with a shade of gray. I think the toner cartridge has leaked toner and...


This could be a drum problem, the drum is part of the toner cartridge in this printer.

If the toner has leaked it will be all over the inside of the printer - you'll see it. I don't think that's the problem.

If the toner cartridge is an original Dell item, then it's likely to be replacable under warranty.

If the cartridge is a remanufactured item, it may be that the wrong toner has been used. Toner is NOT all the same, and this cartridge is one whe the wrong toner really will not work properly for long.

The chances are the changing the toner cartidge will cure the problem, provided you use an original Dell item, or a remanufactured item from a reputable manufacturer.

Dell 1600n all in one printer cartridge drum problem


the drum is a part of the toner in this model. Replacing the toner should resolve the issue.

RESTART Printer


The new magenta cartridge you put in is bad. If you put the old one back in then you get the low toner message. Take the new cartridge back and get another new one.  I found the answer on the dell troubleshoot website
