Possible solutions.

1. Your memory card or internal memory is full. Replace memory card.
2. You are on a manual mode and are not getting correct exposure to fire the shutter. Try going to full automatic setting (in the menu)
3. Defective shutter. Try VERY GENTLY blowing some air around the perimeter of the lens and shutter area. NOT full force air, just a gentle flow of air to remove any particles that might be stuck. Test your compressed air bottle to determine what "gentle" air flow means.

Let me know if we need to go further.

I'm having the same problem. It will still allow me to take video though. I don't know what's going on. I've cleared out my memory, and checked it under settings. Almost all of my memory is clear. I don't know why it's doing that. :(

I don't know where you are. In the UK, I think I would have tried to take this back to the vendor for a replacement or refund early on (in the first year of ownership), but in other countries your rights may be different. Two years on is a bit late to make a warranty claim or return as faulty. Perhaps Panasonic's offer to exchange the camera may be your best option.

If you perform a Google search on the camera make and model you will find a number of consumer reviews, written by ordinary owners, as well as reviews by professionals. This may help you decide whether the model has problems or it is just the one you own.

Pictures taken vertical don't show up vertical in play mode they

From what I remember of the S550, it has an "auto rotate" (or words to that effect) setting in the setup menu. Turn this mode to on or active, and your vertical shots should show up properly oriented on the LCD, without having to rotate the camera each time. Perhaps another expert could correct me if I've made an error on this one.
