Yep this sounds like another symptom of a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

I am pretty certain that your ccd imaging sensor has failed, Some canon models have presented many failures due to high humidty problems, caused by faulty manufacture making them susceptable.These units will be replaced by canon under warranty or not.. I suggest you see your local canon agent. Several other brands are also affected Fuji to name one
