The obvious question - are you sure its a dvd player - does it have the DVD logo on the front?

Anyone that said that this kind of issue is never the Hardware, doesn't know what they are talking about.

For a DVD Drive to read a DVD, it uses a different laser than it would to read a CD.
I have ran into this issue several times on laptops and normally its just the Drive was cheap or old. Replacement of the Optical Drive always fixes that problem. Average DVD-RW Slim model is around $59-79. It is a simple replacement, normally only one screw and then its removable.

You could try a DVD lens cleaning DVD kit. You can usually find them at video rental or retailers that have a fairly large movie section.

I would begin by doing a custom update at windows update and see if it offers you any hardware updates for your system. It sounds like a driver problem to me. Click here for help with that.
Also please take a look at this article or this article and see if you think it may apply to your situation.
If you are getting specific error messages you can reply with the details and I'll be happy to look them up. Otherwise, you might go to the device manager and run the troubleshooter for your dvd drive and see what turns up. (Rt. click on your drive in device manager and choose properties).

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

For troubleshooter, go to Start>Rt click My computer, choose Manage>Device Manager>expand DVD/CD-Rom drives to show your DVD drive, Rt click on the name of the drive, click properties, and choose the troubleshooter. Or go to Help & support and navigate to the hardware and DVD drive and you should be able to access your troubleshooter.
Are you on Vista or XP?
Are you sure you have software installed on your system that will read DVD's? Like WinDVD or Power DVD?

a different laser is used to read CDs than is used to read DVDs. The laser for you CD reader has most likely gone out of alignment. It's time for a drive replacement.

Does not read Cds or DVDs

most sony CD and DVD players have a digital signature design to play CDs and DVDs that are original and licensed. some CDs or DVDs dont work since the player does not recognize or scan any digital signature embedded in the CD or a DVD. 2nd, lens problem causes most players not to read CDs nor DVDs. you can try to buy CD or DVD lens cleaners to have your lens cleaned.

Acer aspire 2930 DVD player only opens some dvds

Try Media player classic under k-lite codec pack. Then open video files on the dvd. If it doesn't help try another codec player. If nothing helps could it be that dvd player is not capable of multilayer dvd reading.

Plays cds but not dvds

If the lens is clean (clean with cotton swab and alcohol), then the optics are failing. DVDs require more power and accuracy to be read than CDs. The ability to read CDs but not DVDs is usually a good indication that the optics are starting to fail.

HP Pavillion dv6121tx 15.4" notebook problem with DVD

Hi

It sounds like a hardware fault on the drive itself. The laser and focussing mechanisms are different for CDs and DVDs. The fact that the drive can read DVDs fine suggests that the laser and lenses can no longer focus correctly to deal with CDs.

Replacement of the drive would be the only fix, although you might find it a lot easier to buy an external USB DVD drive.

Dvd player

Try using a head cleaner cd/dvd to see if that solves the problem. Failing to read a dvd but being ok with cds is norm a sign of drive startin to die. Dvds are harder for it to read due to smaller track width.

Portable dvd player will play music cds but not video dvds

Chances are, your DVD player uses one laser to read CDs, and a different laser to read DVDs (since Cds and DVDs are read at different wavelenghts of light). If the DVDs you're trying to watch work properly in other DVD players, it probably means that the DVD laser is dirty, damaged, or burned out. Though you can try cleaning the laser (use Google for suggestions on how to do this, or check the Audiovox website), you will most likely have to get the DVD player repaired, or buy a replacement. Many of the newer CD/DVD players sold today use a single combination laser, which reads both CDs and DVDs, which means that when the laser fails, it will not work at all. Wish I had better news for you, but I guess that the only consolation you have is that your Audivox player still works with CDs...
