Question about Microwave Ovens

Does not heat

Frigidaire microwave oven model# glmv168ks4 does not heat, and during cycle gives off an odor, not sure but I'm thinking that it could be the magentron or transformer. any help in this matter would be appreciative.

I believe like you, that the magnetron is probably the problem.

but not as to how the limit switches would cause the magnetron

    to buzz during operation

Magnetron likely probem, I should warn you working in compartment can be dangerous due to capacitor and transformer< with or without power supplied > not always magnetron failure is cause there are limit switches in interior of casing as well.

well in description you didn't mention buzz,if this is the case then mag should be problem. unfortunatly there isn't any perfect test for transformer.

Microwave oven does not heat

I think "magnetron" damaged due to leaving metal piece in microwave during previous heating process. If you are sure that other pieces are working good; you may work it back again by replacing old magnetron with exact same one (voltage, amper... values must be same as old one)

No heating after exploding sound lg

This indicates the magnetron has failed, "heart of the microwave oven" if everything else is working then the culprit is as stated above, often gives off a strong odor. In most cases it is cheaper to replace the oven rather than repair.

Advantium - Interior Light Operation While Microwaving

The Advantium 240 oven interior (cavity) light will illuminate anytime the door is open. However, due to the dark tint on the oven door, there is not a light on while cooking since the food would not be visible using the interior lamp.
Food may be viewed during a microwave cycle by pressing the Microwave/Oven Light pad.

One of the Upper Level Speedcook lamps will come on for 5 seconds. The Microwave/Oven Light pad can be pressed up to 5 times during a microwave cooking cycle. The limit of 5 times is to prevent excessive heat on microwave cookware from the Speedcook lamp.

The Advantium 120 oven cavity is illuminated anytime the door is opened and while the unit is in the microwave only mode. As a result it will not have the Microwave/Oven Light pad.

If the light is not operating properly, you will want to have it checked by an authorized service technician. To obtain in or out of warranty repair on Major Appliances, you may call 1-800-GE-CARES (800-432-2737) or schedule service online.

M/N GLMV168KS4 - makes a rattling noise when heating food, but otherwise heats properly. All other functions are working. Any ideas of the problem?

It can be a sign of dying magnetron and possible damage to the microwaves chute. If the chute is damaged then the microwave is not repairable. Check the manufacturer warranty on the magnetron.

The failing transformer will cause a deep "growling" noise; the failure of the magnetron will sound more like a sizzle.

GE Microwave strats, runs, but not heating and have bad odor

there should be 4 screws holding it in.. and one plastic connector with 2 wires in it that are plugged onto the mag..
the seal would be the gold colored mesh around the antenna of the mag. when you take the microwave down you would take the cover off and if looking at it from the back you would look towards the right side and there should be a thermostat there that may have started to burn up. if it is replace it and the wires.. the mag you just unscrew remove and install the new mag.
