Re: Brother MFC-420cn

First I need to know this very important question with complete honesty!
Did you leave your printer switched off / unplugged for more than 2 weeks?
If the answer is yes, how long?
If months, then you have severe blockage due to ink hardening in the print head and possibly the feed tubes. Brother printers are self cleaning but you have to leave them switched on (2p a week electric) and the blacks are particularly prone to drying fastest.
If more than 2 months switched off and unused, I'm afraid to say, only 10% of Brother printers have ever been fully recovered from this state.
First try cleaning 4 times on the Black only if it's the Black that's blocked, but don't print any test pages during this. Then print the test and look for improvement. If none, try it all again and if still no improvement, seek technical help from an Ink Store that carries out manual flushing of tubes and heads. My Store does it, but you have to be in the Swansea area so that you can bring the printer to the store.
Your printer will need cleaning solution forced into the tubes and head and left to sit for at least 24 hours and ink will have to be primed back into these afterward so this uses a substantial amount of ink also. However, there is no point in trying this at all if the printer was left for 3 months or more without use and not switched on for the whole period.
It costs 5 quid plus any inks that have to be replaced during the process, but the 5 quid flush is only payable if successful.

I hope this helps!

Re: Brother MFC-420cn

Change the black one. It could be that the cart is mal manufactured (valve wont open). Use another one and see if there is bk again. When no success after the 2. cleaning cycle try this: If there is more trouble post here.

Black is not working in my brother mfc-240c printer

did you use genunie brother black ink cartridge?

ALL…. Epson & Brother Requires Genuine Cartridges. !!!!!!!!

These printers have a CHIP that will detect if it is Generic or Genuine. When they see it’s Generic Cartridges, it will print lines thru the words, stripes across the picture and also do a mix match with the colors. It also will not let you print anything, if only one of the cartridges is empty.

I wanted to print only Black, and would not let me, because I did not have any ink in one of my cyan cartridges. Go figure.

I located a page on forum, which had plenty of details about similar issues.

Try the forum, there are alot of issues like yours.

Black ink on my Brother MFC-420CN is faint and streaky

You said you replaced the cartridges. Were they Genuine Brothers' Cartridges?

My Brother MFC-240C, does not like Generic Printer Cartridges. That sounds like your problem. Also I had with Brother's was problem with Color. Color that should be Yellow, will turn out Green, or Blue Green, etc. The Generic Cartridges, also printed lines thru the words. That's what the Companies do., so they can keep selling the ink cartridges.

Some Printers, are able to use Generic, but you have to fill them up yourself and I heard, quite MESSY, or Take them to have them filled.

So I learned, thru trial and error, that you must use the ORIGINAL Genuine Cartridges for the PRINTERS.

This is the only advice I can give you. If you find this helpful, pls rate me.

Brother 420CN printer will not print black ink. Have replaced the cartridge and after several cleaning cycles, it still will not print properly. Test Print shows colors are fine but black ink is hit and...

I have a brother MFC 3240C. My Black ink stopped printing(initially printed horizontal faded lines and gradually got worse), the other colors were printing fine. I tried cleaning numerous time( 50 -100 times over 1-2 weeks ). Still no improvement. The way I print now is:
1. I go to Printer Properties
2. Change Media type from "Plain Paper" to "Inkjet Paper".
3. Change Quality to "Photo".

This takes a long time to print 1-2 minutes per page. However, this works for me since this is my Home printer and use it for printing only few pages here are there.

Good Luck

The print head is clogged.Try powerful cleaning:
Press menu, then start black copy, then four times arrow-up quickly after another.Machine will be in maintenance mode
(all lights will flash).
Press 7-6-4 and OK (or start-black-copy).
When finished press 7-6-3 then start black copy,
printer will do a power purge.
Leave maintenance mode by pressing 9-9.
If this not help better think about new printer, because cost of repairing this one is profitable.

Brothers Printers ink cartridges

I have the same problem. I just discovered that if I turn OFF the power before I open the cover to check a cartridge it does not ask me if I just replaced it. I hope it was not just a fluke, otherwise I'll try unplugging the power next time, too. As for the "Can't print with an empty cartridge" problem; IE: Red is empty but you want to print with black; it is either that engineers don't know what they are doing at Brother or they are lazy or the managers are GREEDY. I think it is the last one. That is why I try NOT to buy "Genuine" Brother Ink cartridges. I used to refill them myself when I could find the ink, now I buy 3rd party cartridges. I pay $6.00 each for black and $7 each for color at a "Toner / Ink" shop about 1/2 mile from my office.

Remove the black cartridge again and remove the plastic tape where the ink comes out and then re-insert and try again.

MFC-420CN does not print black

My yellow cartridge was doing the same thing as your black. So I took the cartridge out, and took a flashlight to see how it works. There is like a little straw on the right hand side which goes up into the printer cartridge, this I assume is to measure the ink. I took a needle and cleaned that 'straw' thoroughly. Reseated the ink, ran cleaning and test print, and then the printer found the yellow ink! You could give that a try. It might work for you too. (I have never used any ink but Brother ink in the printer, btw.)

Brother MFC-420CN All-In-One

unplug maqchine from power. take all carts out. wait 5 minutes. connect machine to power. insert carts as demanded. give the right answer if machine asks if the carts are changed. machine will do some cleaning.

do you use generic ink? in that case you might have clogged the printhead with wrong ink. The ph cant be cleaned anymore.

nevertheless try this (carts should be nearly full!):
press menue then start mono (blue copy) then fourtimes arrow up. machine will be in maintenance mode. press 7 then 6 then 4. Machine will display init_all. press start mono. machine will refill tubes and
ph with fresh ink and do some cleaning. after that press 7 then 6 then 3 and start mono. machine will do a powerpurge.
press zero then 9 to do a quality test print. If it cant do the job leave maintenance by pressing 9 then 9. do the test print manually by pressing ink etc.

If you still do not see any colors the ph is clogged and cant be fixed anymore. It has to be replaced.

Black Won't Print On MFC 420 CN

Use another new genuine (original brother) BK cart. Do the cleaning twice only for BK. Wait some time (4 hours). If the ink has dryed up, the cleaning ink will break up the dryed one. Do the cleaning again. If it doesnt work, please write again.
