Question about Whirlpool GS5SHGXLS Stainless Steel Side by Side Refrigerator
I have a Whirlpool side by side with an Ice Magic Plus icemaker. It's about 5 years old and we haven't had any problems with it until recently. Our ice bin was full, so we turned it off. The next day I turned the ice maker back on, but it did not produce ice for well over 4 days. When I noticed there was no ice I found the water line that comes in from the back of the ice maker was frozen. I removed the ice from the tube and turned it back on. Again, the tube froze up within an hour. I have tried removing the line from the exterior of the freezer, made sure it was clear of ice. What could be causing this problem? Whirlpool model number GS5SHGXLS00

When you open the freezer door the light should be blinking. When you hold the flipper door shut (on the left hand side) without blocking the beam, the light should stay on solid. If all of this happens then the optics are o.k. If optics are ok then you most likely have a broken motor module on the icemaker and should replace the icemaker thermostat along with it. A bad icemaker thermostat will lead to the module breaking. If you not sure how to replace these parts then I would just replace the whole icemaker. That would be easiest and usually not much more expensive.

There are instructions available to repair this problem at www.AnyoneCanFixIt.com. They also sell the part needed to make the repair. Common problem on these refrigerators that were made in about 2005 or later and have the ice bin bucket on the door.

I have a 1993 year (16 years old now) Whirlpool side-by-side with icemaker, Model ED22PW. I have had similar problems with the icemaker - water goes in, freezes, but ice does not eject from tray. It has happened to this unit 2 times since 1993. It turns out the problem is not the thermostat. It is the icemaker motor module. The icemaker has a small synchronous (clock) motor that rotates the ice ejector. When it goes bad, the ejector does not rotate, either because the module timer had failed or the motor itself has failed. The solution is to go to your nearest applinace parts dealer and by a new "icemaker motor module" for Whirlpool Model (your model here). Mine cost $58.85 the last time I replaced it in 2006. To install the new module, you will need to remove the icemaker from the refrigerator. Mine has 3 screws that attach it to the side. Also unplug the power & control cable. The water tube slides out when you pull the unit forward. When you get it out, it is then easy to remove the motor module and insert the new one. You may have to reset the timer on the module to get the tray to fill completely.
