At the base of most weedeaters there is a mounting point where the coil that extends down and through the shaft to the head is. It "sounds" like over time it may have finally rattled loose. I know on my weedeater, every season I used to take apart the head and take the shaft completely off, tighten things up and then reassemble and I was usually good for the spring/summer. It's amazing at how much vibration those things can generate and that usually spells loose nuts and bolts by the end of the season.
Testimonial: "Thanks Jeremy! I finally broke down and disassembled the weed eater. Tightened everything down good and now it works! Guess it must have shaken loose from vibrations. Knew it was not the shaft as i took it apart and checked to make sure it was intact. Found nothing wrong except for a loose screw that hold the handle to the shaft. Guess it must have loosened up and not made a good connection with the motor. Tightened it up good and now it works fine! Thanks!"

Cranks up and runs fine. Head will spin occassionally, especially after I unscrew and retighten the shaft from the motor. I make sure it seats firmly in place and then screw it tight. It will work then for about 1-2minutes, at which point the engine just revs and the head slowly stops spinning!
