The filter bag(s) most likely have a hole or two in them. It could also be the filter bag outlets are not will connected to the manifold allowing DE to get inside the filter.

Scspriggs is on the money - the filters get small holes at the edges - you can use silicon to repair.

Also when re-fitting filters - they must be alined in the slots - not as easy as it sounds - take your time - check work after and before putting together.
Good luck.

Trying to put pump system together. Do we remove the drain screen before adding sand?

Our terminology is not coinciding...
Follow these steps...
  • 1st - understand that a pump moves water thru your system.
  • A filter cleans your water
Sand does not go into a pump.
sand goes into the filter.
  • when adding sand into filter tank, top valve is not in place, you Need to first add water, to cover the laterals at bottom
  • Then PLACE a cap or something/anything, over the stand pipe, so NO sand goes into that pipe! IMPORTANT! Begin to add sand.
    • Do this slowly, being very careful to NOT disturb position of stand pipe! Do NOT Lift it or allow it to rise up! Keep it centered!!
  • Add required amount of sand
  • Remove stand pipe cover/cap that placed
  • Install valve onto tank
  • Complete plumbing in-out of the valve
    • Presuming you have the plumbing complete from and to pool?
    • Pool suction port to front of pump. Out of pump into 'Pump' port of filter valve
    • Out of 'Return' port to pool

I have jacuzzi fm sand filter pool pump can see that one of the water outlets in the pool is not working as effectively as the other When I turn unit on both gauges flutter out of control and after thirty...

close all the valves on the filter and return dont want any water running out of the pool.. then remove the pump lint pot cover..and the strainer if equipted with one..get pressurized air and blow backwards into the low side pool return see if anything may be blocking those lines..sometimes leaves or floating debris gets past the pump and filter and will collect in some of the underneath joints and passages .. it takes air to release plunging your toilet..

While vacuming loses suction, sand filter pressure goes high

That increase is due to the filter loading up with debris. Is the pool unusually dirty? If there is a lot of dirt and silt in the pool use the "waste" setting on your backwash valve while vacuuming.
This allows the water to bypass the filter and go directly out the waste line. Keep an eye on your water level because you will be removing water from the pool and may have to add more.

I have 7 year old Hayward ProSeries, S-244S, H/R Sand filter. I've notice that when I vacuum the pool, dirty water returns to the pool. I've backwashed and the spider gasket is fine. No sa

sand filters only have limited filtration. If the dirt is very fine such as dead algae, it will go right through the filter. Use a clarifier to help give the filter finer filtration. Do not vacuum until you can see what you are doing, then vacuum on 'waste'

Pentair Minimax has worked correctly for 5 years. Now is comes on and the heater starts up for maybe 30 seconds and shuts off for a minute or two. It cycles like this for a really long time... a couple...

Usually this means that the flue temperature sensor indicates too high a temperature. this is usually caused by too low water flow through the heater and therefore both the water and the flue temperature is too hot. You should check all the baskets, the pump impeller, the filter and any return devices to make sure water can flow at full rate. It is unlikely but maybe the flue temperature or control board is defective. If all else fails you may be able to call the Pentair technical support line to help diagnose the problem. I hop this helps.

When vacuuming pool dirty water is being sent back into pool. filter is one year old

Are you sending thw water to waste or ar you filtering it? If you are filtering it through a multi port valve, the spider gasket could be faulty. Proper way to vacuum is through the filter then back wash the filter after cleaning the pool.

I suggest you take the top from your filter and inspect the sand, it should be solid over the top. Have you tracked the pressures over the past year? When was the last back wash? You should back wash only when the pressure goes up 20 PSIG from start (when the filter is clean and free of debris.)

Tell me more please. . . .

How to set up

You can go to and download a manual for your exact model. When you say how do you set up, from scratch or to startup. The inlet and outlets are marked. Basically your pump suction line from the pool skimmer and/or main drain goes to the pump. The discharge of the pump goes to the filter inlet. The filter outlet goes back to the pool return outlets in the pool. The waste goes to the ground or a hose to any safe place to deposit lots of water.

Pressure increase over the red line on pressure gauge while we were away for a weekend. Now pool is cloudy white. I am assuming this is DE. Back washed and cleaned filter twice. However, after running...

When the pressure goes up, try this. Pour some muriatic acid in the skimmer. (about 1/2 bottle) Let pump run for a little bit,(long enough for acid to get into filter)then shut off pump for 5 minutes or so. If pressure goes down to where it should be when it's turned back on, it needs to be disassembled and cleaned and then acid washed.
