When you say the screen is dark, do you mean that the picture is still faintly visible or is the left side black with a sharp edge between the black and the visible picture?
If the screen is dark with a faintly visible picture then you have a faulty backlight. This could be due to the inverter board, which can be repaired or replaced, or it could be the CCFL tube which is a bit harder to replace.
If the left side is completely black with a sharp edge then the LCD itself is faulty and may require replacing.
In any case, any of the problems listed above should only be repaired by a competant electronics engineer.
Your pictures will usually come out black if you're taking those against the light. Check the lighting or your flash (esp. when it's dark - flash is needed). You should know if your camera is for indoor or outdoor use.
Sounds like a bad screen asy,part number 204809,must use the generic,or you could have weak tubes,if so you may just need to turn up the screen drives,this part is located in the right top of the set with the back removed,if no cracks are present adj. the three marked screen's,turn the color all the way down in your menu and adj. for a black and white picture.
