Question about Sony STR-DA90ESG

Error code - protector

Sony stereo DA90ESG powers on but gives a 'protector' error. Any help?

I have the stereo completely dis-connected from all components - and get this error.

  • goedp Apr 20, 2009

Still no luck. (there is a secondary clicking (relay) post power up. first click when the unit is powered on and energizing, and sencond click when the PROTECTOR error comes up.

    1) I've opened the cover and pulled the connecters off PCB that go to the outside speaker jacks. (still errors)

    2) Held down the DISPLAY and PANEL UP/DOWN and got the CLEAR message, but still get the error

    3) I suspect it to be in the power amp unit, but do not know how to troubleshoot the power transistors (NEP250)

Try disconnecting all the speakers from the back and turn the unit back on. If the "protector" display goes away, turn the unit back off and reconnect one speaker. Turn it back on and check for "protector". Repeat.

If you find that one of the speakers causes "protector" to appear, you either have a bad speaker cable or bad speaker. Try swapping each of those out to see what happens.

If you have all of the speakers disconnected from the back of the unit, check to make sure there isn't anything (such as a strand of speaker wire) shorting the speaker connections. If not, the receiver may need repair.

Have you tried turning off the receiver and unplugging it? Plug it back in after a few seconds and turn it on to see if Protector re-appears.

    Sorry if this doesn't help.

One more thing to try... with everything disconnected.

    1. Turn off the receiver
    2. Hold down DISPLAY and PANEL UP/DOWN buttons and press power.
    3. All Clear should appear on the screen.

Let me know if this helps.

Sorry, but I don't know much about internal components. If you get stuck, you could always find a local repair facility by going here:

I wish I could have been more help. Best of luck to you!

MySony str-da5000es is showing error code 11 and shut off by itself after few seconds.check and disconnect all speakers, unplugged power from wall and still showing error 11. am missing something in here...

error code 11 (protector) - According to the manual, 11/PROTECTOR means, "Irregular current is output from the speakers. Turn of the receiver, check the speaker connection and turn on the power again." Most likely, a strand of speaker wire is shorted to the chassis at one of the speaker terminals.
Hope this helps !

Function Selector Bypasses Input Sources

Hopefully this post isn't too late... That receiver has the ability to disable certain inputs. The easiest thing to try is to do a factory reset.
1. Turn off the receiver
2. Hold down DISPLAY and PANEL UP/DOWN buttons and press power.
3. All Clear should appear on the screen.

Unfortunately, this clears out all of the other settings on your unit. It should, however, re-enable the inputs.

Let me know if this helps!

Shorted out during a storm; fuses fine; trying to determine problem

Hi

Hoping you could give me a bit more information regarding your amp. Had any of the fuses blown? Just wondering what you mean by the amp is shorted out. Does it blow fuses or is it tripping an earth leakage circuit breaker?

Awaiting your advice

The receiver has detected a problem in the final output stage and has shutdown to prevent further damage to either the amp or the speakers. The most common cause of this is shorted output transistors. Figure about $15-$30 for parts plus the local labor rate.

Protector mode

The problem is that the output transistor(s) are shorted causing the unit to shutdown in what is called "protect" mode. This is a common failue and should be easily repaired by a service shop for about $25-$40 in parts plus labor.
