SOURCE: WD passport 320GB Can I use it as storage, not backup?

You can use it as storage if you would like. You can also delete files once they are put on the passport. When it is connected to the computer open my computer and it will be listed there. You can use it as storage by copying files into this way rather than syncing it. Syncing it could cause you to lose files.

My WD wants to install syn software. None of the files look like the files originally pulled for backup. My hard drive crashed and I need to restore to a new Hard drive - what do I do?

When you connect the drive, ignore the sync option. Do note in your "my computer" WD will have two drive letters (one is a read only drive) that contains the sync software. The other drive letter will be where you data is stored. If you used the sync software to backup your files; you need to install to get your data back. If you simply copied your data from one drive to another; the files should be there in their original form.

How do I completely remove the WD Sync software so I can use my 500GB WD external hard drive for manual copy-and-paste

Assuming you are using XP, Vista, or 2000 you can format it as a NTFS drive. while a lt of folks do not like Vista, this is one area where it really shines.

Plug in your WD PASSPORT.

Bring up the START menu -> right click COMPUTER-> select MANAGE -> select STORAGE ->select DISK MANAGEMENT.

Find the dive -> select/highlight the WD PASSPORT -> right click and select FORMAT. make sure to format as an NTFS drive. Depending on the size of the drive this might take a while - so go have dinner and a movie.

I don't know how to check the files on my WD passport. I'm looking just for pictures and itunes. Can you tell me how this is done?

you plug the drive into a usb port.... if it doesn't automatically pop up to allow you to access the drive... go to my computer (or computer on vista) and go in there... it should appear as another drive. double click and you are in the drive.

My passport "removes" my files!

WARNING: Do not think that theyourWD Passport, using the WD Sync software, is a backup drive; it is NOT !

As per the documentation with this device:
"synchronization software is intended to synchronize the data from a
computer to the drive (WD Passport) and SHOULD NOT be used as backup
software. To use this software properly, we advise that you do not wipe or
erase the data from the internal hard drive (computer) and resynchronize, as
this will cause the data that WD Sync stored to the Passport to be deleted."

This is why you are hearing so many people saying that they are deleting the
WD Sync software, reformatting, and using the WC Passport as a true backup
drive where you can actually see the files that you are backing up, rather
than a bunch of unrecognizable sync files that likely don't have all the files that you thought you "backed up".

Back up files

You will need to fix your computer, re-install the WD Sync software, and then synchronize. The files on your WD, using WD Sync, don't appear as regular files, rather a format unique to Sync.
