Question about Tomtom GO 720 GPS

1 Answer

I plug in my tomtom go 720 and I get an The error saying "USB device not recgonized" I've tried switching ports and get the same error. One of the solutions posted was a soft reset. What is a soft reset? Do I just push the reset button on the bottom of the unit? if so, will I lose all the information previously downloaded? Thanks

Question
· How to soft-reset my navigation device
Answer
· In rare cases, your TomTom device may not start correctly or may stop responding. If this happens, try resetting your device. A reset does not delete any data.

Question
· Device not connecting to computer

Answer
The moment you connect your TomTom device to a computer, your device should ask Do you want to connect to 'computer'. Once you tap YES it should connect to the computer.
If your device is not connecting try solutions below:

Device not responding :

· Make sure your device is fully charged before connecting it to the computer.
· First connect your device to the computer and then turn on the device using the On/Off button.
· Try using a different USB port.
Connection to your computer may not be successful if you use a USB hub or a USB port that is on the keyboard, on the front of a desktop computer or a USB port that is not supported by your computer vendor.

Device not recognised by computer:

Windows XP

  • Make sure you have the latest Service Pack for Windows installed.
  • Make sure you are logged in as an 'Administrator' to ensure that you have sufficient rights to connect new hardware to your computer.
  • Make sure your device is listed as a Removable drive under My Computer. If it is not listed, you should enable your device in the Device Manager.

How to recharge my tom tom online

By online, I'm assuming you mean connected to your computer (via the USB port).
Just power on your GPS, then connect your GPS to your computer, using the USB port, and decline the CONNECT to Computer prompt. The GPS will then still be plugged into the USB port and the battery will be charged.

When I try to connect my tom tom 720 to my lap top a message says usb connection is not recognised

Have you tried to connect to a desk top through the USB port to isolate the laptop or GPS issue.

If you get the same problem with a desktop than I would suggest that you perform a hard reset to the GPS. This is done through the pin hole in the case labled "Reset" insert the tip of a paper clip into the reset hole and reset the device.

If this fails try reloading the GPS software, there are instructions on the Tom Tom web site

I had the same problem. I tried uninstalling software and re-installing it. That did not help. I reset my TomTom Go 720 with the reset button on the bottom of the unit. The computer then recognized my TomTom.
