C4180 printer aa-in-one message says remove and check color cartridge I have done this but the same message keeps coming up

    I have taken the color cartridge out cleaned it put it back same message. I took it out to try to use the machine just for black and white copys it tell me to replace the cartridge and it wont make a copy

    no the cartridge is a brand new H/P color cartridge we never use color we only copy in black and white

To start power cycle the printer:

  • remove cartridges, unplug printer usb and power cable.
  • restart computer
  • restart printer
  • connect printer
  • refit cartridges

If that did not work.

Clean the metal contacts inside the ink carriage with cotton and isopropyl alcohol.

If that does not solve the problem , then probably the contacts to the color printer head on the ink carriage are broken, and that is the reason why it does not recognize the ink tank.

Hi,,
I suggest you try these
1.Check whether the cartridge is working in some other printer... 2.check whether any ink is spilled near the circuit (down-part of the cartridge, the nearby area from whare ink comes out.
3.If you have refilled your colour cartridge then u mayt have done it wrongly..the new printers of HP have their thread design which many people don't know which leads to incorrect way of refiling.. 4.The cartridge may be a dduplicate one.

It doesn't mean the ink is out. If the ink was out, the printer would say "Out of ink. Replace cartridge." Also, you would have been getting low on ink messages. That doesn't mean that the cartridge *isn't* low on ink, but the ink level is not what's causing this issue.

You already did step one: verify it's the right cartridge. On to the rest...

Step Two:Clean the problem cartridge contacts
-Clean the electrical contacts on the print cartridge and in the carriage in the printer.
-Open the printer lid and wait until the print cartridge carriage stops moving.
-Remove the cartridge and place it on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up.

NOTE: If you are removing a tri-color, photo, or gray photo print cartridge, try to clean the contacts quickly enough that the cartridge is not outside of the printer for more than 30 minutes. The ink can dry and clog the nozzles if the cartridge is outside of the printer for too long.

-Unplug the printer.
-Dip a clean cotton swab in distilled water, and then squeeze it to remove most of the moisture.
-Clean the print cartridge contacts. Do not touch the nozzles.
-Clean the contacts in the print carriage, inside the printer.
-Either let the cartridge sit for ten minutes to allow the cleaned area to dry, or use a new swab to dry it.
-Reinstall the cartridge and ensure that the cartridge is fully seated in the print carriage.
-Plug the printer back in, and close the printer cover.

If you have completed all of the steps above and are still experiencing a problem, proceed to the next step.

Step three: Reset the printer
-Disconnect the Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable from the back of the printer, but leave the printer turned on.
-Open the cover of the printer and remove the print cartridges.
-Close the cover and wait for the Insert Ink Cartridges message.
-Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and wait for one minute.
-Reconnect the power cord. If the printer does not automatically turn on, press the Power button.
-Open the cover and reinsert the print cartridges.
-Close the cover. If prompted, print a calibration page.
-Reconnect the USB cable, and try to print a print job from the computer.

If you have completed all of the steps above and are still experiencing a problem, proceed to the next step.

Step four: Replace the cartridge

If the problem has not been solved by the steps above, replace the problem cartridge. If you do not have a replacement print cartridge, proceed to the next step.

Step five: Print in backup mode

If you do not have a replacement print cartridge, you can still print in ink backup mode until the issue is resolved. Remove the color cartridge and print with the black cartridge.

If you remove the tri-color cartridge, the printouts will be in grayscale.

Step six: Service the product (Call HP for repair/replacement)

    repeatedly clean the cartriage with tissue paper or napkin with filtered water and try to insert or re-insert the cart.

If the color cartridge contacts are clean and there is stil ink in the cartridge.
What you could try is to remove both ink cartridges.
Close cover and turn off printer and unplug the printer.
Wait at least 15 minutes for the printer to reset to clear memory.
Plug the printer back in and turn on and install the ink cartridges.
If you cartridge is not empty and has not expired.
You may call HP and ask for a free replacement.

I have the same problem. If you have a clue what to do, please let me know as well. I have done all of the remove and insert things. I have cleaned both cartridge and nozels. But nothing new is happening.

My hp C4180 screen keeps displaying :"remove and check cartridge on right". When I do and place back into the slot it repeats the message.


check the pins as they may be dirty. the pins are the ones of the carraige of the printer. remove the heads and wipe it clean with a kleenex. use distilled drinking water if you need to, not alcohol or any other water. if it still persist check with another cartridge, the cartridge may need replacement.

Hp Photosmart c4180 - Keeps saying "remove cartridge on the right" I have removed and replaced with new cartridge however the problem persists please help.


Pick up the printer. Carry it outside. Lift the lid on your trash can. Gently place printer in trash can. Close lid. Wait until garbage day. Open trash can lid........problem solved. Reminder.. never buy HP again.

Printer won't print color only black and white


Reinsert the color cartridge. Give print command for page. Open Preferences in print window. Open the Color tab. Click on Print in Color. (It may have been set for black only.) Try printing.

Hi ,
This product clearly needs a servicing as far as my experience goes . Still we shall go ahead and try to reach the solution or else this definitely needs servicing. I shall explain why -
1. check cartridge on right : if you have replaced the black cartridge and have been using the original cartridges then its an issue with the print heads. The black print head needs to be replaced by the local service centre . There is a blockage in the nozzles of the print cartridge that passes out the ink.
2. slam to the right : if i am not wrong this is the carriage you are referring to. Do the following steps (though i presume you might have done it if you have reset the printer)-
a. pull out the power cable
b. open the cartridge door and hold the carriage with your hand and move it manually 4-5 times left to right with as much speed as possible....there should be no obstruction on the way it moves.....if there is a pin / peice of paper / any obstruction - remove it if you can. The carriage could also slam if the pin of its movement has gone loose and it keeps on slamming uncontrolably. This seriously needs a servicing from the local service centre.
