The receiver gets the fax with a black line through the page from the top to the bottom.

Have the reciever make a COPY on their machine, you also do the same thing. Whoever is getting a black line on their COPY is the person with the problem. You dont give any make or models so its hard to be exact but.... open the feeder on the sending machine, there will be a thin **** of glass probably with some "junk" on it which is causing the problem, it may be almost underneath a roller, but not 100% on that as dont know make or model...if its the receiving machine its not your problem( unless your the receiver.)..but depending on make and model the drum cartridge could be scratched causing the line.

Cannot recieve or send faxes

Check out the Easy Setup Instructions available here. If you can neither send nor receive faxes, you may not have the phone line connected to the correct port, see page 34 of the guide. Also check what receive mode the machine is set for. Pages 42 and 43 explain the different options and how to change the receive mode.

Black line going down the middle of the page

lift the auto feeder and clean the scanner glass that your pages scan across -it is dirty. You can make a copy afterward and this will tell you if you have solved the problem.

Can't receive faxes but can send them okay

The easiest thing to check is the recieve mode setting. most of the time when this happens the machine is set on manual recieve. Set it to automatic recieve and you should be fine.

Cant receive faxes

First make sure your line cable is plugged into the correct place. Most Brother machines have a plug for Line and a plug for Extension (EXT), make sure it's plugged into "Line".

Go into the menu on your Brother machine and select Fax, then Setup Receive and then select Easy Receive. This will usually solve most recieve problems.
Brother machines come with s default of 4 rings before they will answer, make sure none of your other devices (such as an answering machine) are set to a lower number of rings or the fax machine will never grab the line.

If you have distinctive ring, make sure you have it set up in the machine. There is a section in the owners manual for setting up discinctive ring.

If the machine grabs the line and goes through the motions but nothing comes out on the page (no black print) then make sure you are using a Brother ink cartridge (not refilled or generic) and print out the test page using the "ink" button. Allow the machine to clean a few times and see if the test page prints out correctly. If you are using refills or a generic black, you might have premanently damaged the print head. In this case take it to a service centre to have the head tested.

Fax was set for two line use, now is using only one - how do we change the settings?

This is an older discontiued model as I can recall. Simply just plug the phone line into L1 and leave L2 unconnected. The one that can send will also automatically recieve (L1). L2 settings are prohibit TX and send/ recieve.
