You can do this one of two ways. Either you can set a universal "Notification Tone" for your phone with the desired song, or you can set a specific notification tone for your particular messaging app.
To set a universal tone (which will play when messages arrive, and for calendar events and other "notification" type events), do this: - Go to your App Drawer and tap Settings - Tap "Sound" - Tap "Notification Ringtone" and select the song you want. If the song doesn't appear in your list, download RingDroid and use it to save the tone as a Notification tone. Basically, you'll just open the sound in RingDroid, tap the menu key and then save it as a notification tone.
If you only want the sound for a particular app, like the default messaging app, you'll need to open that app, tap the menu key, access the Settings menu and look for something like "Notification settings." In the default messaging app, the option is at the bottom of the Settings screen, and you tap "Select ringtone" to choose the sound you want to play when a message arrives.
Look on the back or on the side someplace, what you are looking for is a small hole, just a little bigger then a paperclip. This should be the reset button, hit that with said paperclip and then allow the system to reboot. This should clear up the problem.
Have you tried resetting the unit? If you take the faceplate off (put your fingernail in the top center of the faceplate, and you will be able to pull it forward. It then pops off), there is a reset button on the bottom right of the machine. Press this and see if it helps.
What is your version of firmware? At the main menu, press the wrench symbol, then the gear symbol and then the "about" button.
Tell me what the GPS firmware version is. If it's v6.1, there is a bug in that version that defeats the attention tone.
You can also try to see if the tone has been turned off. The tone setting is found in the Navigation menu. Look for "Attention Tone" setting. You can toggle it on or off... however if you have firmware version v6.1, the tone will no longer work.
Lcstryper, I'm looking at my manual and you have it wired right, red power, black ground. Manuel also says to hold button down until you hear the power tone sound.
Got a meter, check to see you have power where you hooked it up.
