Question about Apple iBook G4 Mac Notebook

1 Answer

My ibook G4 was freezing on airport earlier this week but now froze on startup and then will not bring up the startup window any more. Is this a hard drive issue?

Thanks so much for the answer! I did a little more checking too and tried to remember more of what it was doing. I haven't installed anything and tried to keep up with the updates, I don't leave CDs/DVDs in the drive and really don't even use it every day. I fully charged the battery and was finally able to get it to start up fine before it crashed again shortly after. That's making me wonder if it is the battery gone bad. I don't normally leave this one plugged in and never had to replace the battery on my old one. The other issue that I know others have run into is with the date reverting back to 1969 - so I need to read again to find out what this means. Again - I appreciate your help!

This is a very open question, which can be open to many interpretations. but if you are concerned that your HD is a goner, the easiest way to find out is by listening to your drive's "noises." If you hear that the drive is make "repetitive" noises as if it almost sounds that it's "stuck" trying to read something. Then, it will most likely be your HD. There is software that can read your HD and tell you how the partitions and physical health of your HD are doing. But if you are no wiz at this, then "noises" may be your best guide. Since, you will most likely notice that your HD isn't making its usual "noise.s" The other side of the coin is... have you been messing with your mac's language? did you install something that you didn't even know what it was? (but you did anyways) did you accidently click on something, that was actually important? or is there something on your dvd/cd slot? sometimes if you leave a cd/dvd in the slot it may prevent mac from starting properly or just slowing the start up to a crawl. I'm not so sure about this one, but Apple recently released an update for airport. try to install it, but then again if you can't even start up... If i was on your position, and I kept a good track of what I do with my computer, and I knew it was a couple of years old.... I would consider replacing the hard drive. HDs will last a couple of years, but since they have moveable parts.. they have to break at some point.
So there, those are pretty much all the possibilities that you should consider. Hope that helps and good luck
PS that's why is important to always BACK UP your data :-)

The pointer jumping on the screen sounds like you may have picked up a virus. While rare, there are mac viruses. I would try to save all my data documents and any other valuable personal files or lists, then do a clean reinstall of the operating system. Then load our documents back in.
You could try to scan for a virus with a mac virus program, but not many are available for a G4 Power PC (PPC) machine.

I recently got a ibook g4 from someone that said the os kept freezing at the startup. I tried reinstalling from the install disk that came with it. It get to the end of the first disk then says there was...

Your hard drive is failing or has some bad sectors. You can get HDD Regenerator software and run it and it most of the time will regenerate the bad sectors causing problems such as yours. If that doesn't work then your hard drive is failing. Also the install disc may be corrupt/scratched causing the error as well. The OS freezing at startup also indicates the hard drive is bad.

Ibook g3

First of all, you need an Airport card for the iBook G3, chech for example this link; http://popular.ebay.com/ns/Computers-Networking/Original-Airport-Card.html (you should buy one like this: 9deeeda.jpg

, there is a G4 card too, but your iBook doesn't support this one).
Next, install it;

Then, buy a wireless router that uses 802.11b/g or 802.11b. This is very important because your airport card doesn't support 802.11g, and install it, but don't protect your network with a WAP password, your iBook doesn't support this, but use WEP.
Then start your iBook, and click on the Airport icon in the right corner, select your network, type in the password and it will work!

My iBook G4 continues to run slowly and/or freeze

Try resetting the PRAM by turning on the iBook then holding option + command + P + R and wait till u hear another chime. If it still freezes, it may indicate an application may be causing it to lock up hold shift after you hear the chime to boot OS X into safe boot.

Stuck on the restart your computer screen.

You may have installed something in the startup items folder that your mac isn't liking.
When you turn the iBook on, press the shift key as soon as you hear the startup tone. hold it down until you see the gray apple screen. This will get you into safe mode, hopefully then you'll be able to fix whatever you did from there. If you are still at a loss, get in touch.

Ibook g4 freez

Freezing is a HD problem. Do you hear clicking sometimes? Sometimes on boot up is there a foler with a questionmark in it? I would get your hard drive looked at, this is the reason disc utility fails. Your hard drive has a hiccup.
