Camera will not turn on. tried changing batteries, clean contacts on batteries and camera. Bent contacts to increase contact ...nothing happens, no lights, no sound ...nothing ...I had just finished taking a picture and was going to take more. When I pressed the on switch...nothing happened. Tried taking memory card out and putting it back ...nothing...tried all the buttons and switches...nothing

In the short term you can take the memory card out and use a card reader - at least that will let you see the pictures.

LCD display stays dark and it will not take photos.

Say bye-bye to your CCD. They do go bad after a certain period of time. My recommendation is get a quote for replacement repair or buy another used A85. Hope this helps.

CCD sensor fault : playback fine but no image in capture mode. Replace the sensor. Canon repairs thse faults free of charge but you need to find out what their policy is with A85. As I said this is a classic : I get + - 5 A85s every week with this particular fault.

Canon A85 power on problem

I think we can rule out a problem with the cards, which leaves the camera. maybe one of the cf pins is bent?? look into the slot with a light and check for any pins out of line, if you find any, see if you gently push it back into place. I saw the exact same problem, having the same fix. try also connecting AC through a cable and the camera to the computer, see if it makes any change. Whats your warranty status? use it if you still got it, if not, get a repair estimate. Hope it works out
