Unit says please format the player with your pc

If it works OK on you PC and not in the WD, it suggests to me that you have the disk incorrectly formatted. Most media players use a Linux format not a windows format (fat or ntfs). Try deleting the partition in the PC and then format it with the WD. I presume that you replaced it with the same size disk as many of them will not use anything larger than the original size.

First off, make sure the unit is not on hold. You can check that by looking at the side for the HOLD switch.

Next try to reset the player. Here's how you do it:
With the unit, get a paperclip and poke the reset hole at the back of the unit until the unit shuts off.

Try to turn on the unit and check if the buttons will be activated. If they'll work, format the player.

Next, what exactly happens when you try formatting the player using your PC?
You can try going to My Computer. There, you're going to see teh YP-K5. You DO NOT format that. Rather, double click on it. You're suppsoed to see a STORAGE folder. Right click on that directory and select FORMAT.

It might be cause by a corrupt firmware. You need to have a utility that restore the mp3 player to its original setting. i had exactly the same problem with my ipod shuffle 1st generation 2 years ago. Good thing Apple has that utility for me to download and until no it is still working. Try formatting, synch your library using a synch software like media player, realplayer, media monkey etc. Do not remove the USB if it is 'Updating'.

Turn off the unit and connect it to the computer.
The computer should recognize the player.
Run a program called Mpio Utility (Can be found on the CD or Mpio.com)
Select format & Config
That should do the trick.
