SOURCE: sync clock with yamaha RX-V659
Are you using the 48khz or 44.1 for you spdif output. check that you have the output correctly formatted or it will not sync correctly. You should not need to have clocks synced to get spdif to work.

SOURCE: av amplifier
The display problem is because the solderings on the back of the display are broken. To fix it you have to open the amp and redo the solderings (there are about 50 or 60 of them). There is a Youtube video that shows how to do it. I have fixed this on my DSP-A1.
I also have the problem with the motorized volume control. I have tried cleaning it, and it works for a few days, then it's stuck again. I guess I will have to replace it to have it fixed permanently. The part number is VZ621400, a new one costs about 40$.

HDCP is copyright protection for HDMI ensuring that you can't copy the protected material.
Did you connect some new DVD player or new TV to the receiver? However the error should clear once you disconnect everything from HDMI. If not, try to restore the receiver to factory defaults.
