Question about HP Officejet Pro L7780 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Generic black ink cartridge causing black ink to not print

We used a generic black ink cartridge with our HP Officejet Pro L7780 printer. This caused the black ink to not print at all. We replaced the black ink cartridge with an HP88 cartridge. Now, the black ink starts to come in, but it has white lines across the letters or the letters are chopped off. We have run alignment/cleanings multiple times. Eventually, the ink comes in clear. We have never had this problem before using HP88 ink cartridges. It only started when we tried the generic ink cartridge. Do you think this is this going to occur everyday? Do you think our printhead is clogged? Do you think this has occured because of the generic ink or because HP printheads do not work well with pigment ink vs dye ink? Can the printhead be cleaned manually if needded? Do printheads clear out on their own as we keep HP88 ink going through it? THANKS FOR YOUR IMMEDIATE HELP!

Hi,

Try reset your printer by following this procedure to reset it,

1. Without turning the unit off, unplug the power cord from the back of the product.
2. Press and hold # and 6 keys.
3. While holding those keys plug the power cord back in.
4. Wait until the screen goes blank before you release those keys.
5. Follow on printer screen instructions.This should fix the problem.

I have to ask this question of you, just to make sure this is not an issue. Are you using a factory new ink or toner cartridge?
Please consider the following:
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridges that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks or toner causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead or photo conductors.
If you are using factory new ink or toner cartridges, then please call the manufacturer’s Technical Support for assistance with the warranty on the cartridges

I am getting the following error code "00989C98" L7780


Hi this appears to be part of a generic problem possibly caused due to power surges…

As recommended by HP on these types of errors:

1: Disconnect the USB cable from the back of the product, but leave the product turned on.
2. Open the cover of the product and remove the print cartridges.
3. Close the cover and wait for the Insert Ink Cartridges message to display.
4. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product and wait for one minute.
5. Reconnect the power cord. If the product does not automatically turn on, press the Power button.
6. Open the cover and reinsert the print cartridges.
7. Close the cover. If prompted, print a calibration page.
8. Reconnect the USB cable, and try to print a print job from the computer.

If this works, please grade the answer... If the steps don’t work I would recommend you check with HP.

Won't recognize black cartridge on hp officejet pro l7780


Ok what you need to do is powerdown the printer the pull all ink out of the printer power it on without in then power it down again and replace the cartridges. If this doesnt work go into the control panels and select the color of the ink as only B&W and print a test page

i assume you have installed the original cartridge, in this case you may need to reinstall the ink once again, the head contains a small chip that recognize the presence of the new ink, unless you are using a generic one which can also cause this issue

You should take it back and exchange it or read on below.

Most modern cartridges have an ink level chip built on to them.
Should the level drop below 25% then most of these chips lock up and will not reset.
Re-filling them will have no effect
If you are lucky you should be able to find either a resetter around on the internet
OR
Even better empty cartridges that never need to be reset.

The second option is my preference

I realise these are not for your specific printer but there are others listed on both those sites as well

Try to reinstall your printer.

Check your black cartridge if they are installed properly.

Replace your black cartridge with a new one.
