Question about Cameras

3 Answers

The zoom is stuck on my Olympus Camedia C-8080 camera following a short face-down drop. How can I open and repair this, or where can I get it done cheaply? The camera has served me well, and although I've already upgraded to the Canon EOS 40D SLR I;d still like to use the old Olympus. Thanks for any assistance. Dan dbdan@mwt.net

Already contacted Olympus and base charge would be $253 plus tax. I was hoping for a DIY response. Thanks.

Hi dbdan270,

unfortunately, you will not be able open this and repair it. Your best is to call olympus and find out where their flat rate repair is and see if it is worth it for you to do. We are an authorized service center for epson, and they dont even allow us to service their cameras, we have to send it to them for a whole unit repair. The reason is first, when the lens area gets opened, dust particles go into the shutter area, and also the components are very small and special equipment is needed to service the camera.

here is the link of olympus service centers, there are 3 in the u.s. Call them and find out what the repair is.

Olympus c-8080 will not power on, batteries were charged one new tried both but press power and nothing happens

Either the batteries are completely shot (shorted out) or the orientation of the batteries is incorrect. Make sure they are facing the correct direction. Otherwise, you'll need to take your camera to a repair shop for troubleshooting. In the case of a consumer-level camera like this one, you probably will end up with a repair estimate that would exceed the value of a new camera. Good luck!

Olympus 8080 C 8080 wide zoom

It may have jumped a tooth, something like a car timing chain. The Zoom in this camera is a barrel that has 3 cams that rides inside another barrel that has "tracks" for the cams. The motor rotates the the outer barrel via gear teeth, forcing the inner barrel to extend or retract. There is a tab on the gear teeth that might index the position of the zoom lens. If this tab is in the wrong position, if the gear jumped a few teeth, the camera may not know where the zoom lens is in relation to the inner focusing lens, and cause the "zoom error" If that is the case, I can help you get it back into position. This is a theory, but does explain the tab on the gear and the constant zooming.

Zoom lever (Olympus Camedia C-8080 Wide Zoom Digital Camera ) does not work

If you can get to the ribbon cable that the zoom lever is attached to, you can use a multimeter or a continuity tester to see if the lever is actually shorting any traces on the ribbon. the zoom lever acts upon a motor that rotates the iner lens barrel, possible the motor lead is open or the switch under the lever is dirty/faulty.

Connect an flash and aftermarket bracket

When using an external flash with the C-8080 Wide Zoom, you will need the appropriate flash cable with your flash and aftermarket bracket. The Hot Shoe Flash Cable (FL-CB05) mounts to the C-8080 Hot Shoe and the opposite end attaches to the aftermarket flash bracket’s flash shoe or to a standard tripod attachment thread (1/4x20).
